Here is the drum that is on the car now, PN 21105010615G:
This is the axial measurement from inner to outer surface:
The EMPI replacement has a longer, incompatible measurement, and so of course can't fit:
Also, the rim is shaped differently, and may or may not fit the stock backing plate; original on left, new drum on right:
I'll return the drum, and am using the old one temporarily. My source is usually impeccable. Anyone know what gives? |

As long as the supplier can source the correct one, chalk it up to bad luck and move on.
BTW, I recently got a '69 Bay and will be doing the brakes during the winter months. Can I ask, how much do the drums cost you? _________________ **1971 Super Project

Replacement hubs suck
Replacement drums suck
OG steel doesn’t suck. Always try and buy OG if possible.
Resellers like the busco or similar places might help _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

Ok, so the plot thickens! Thanks for the info, more investigation to come.
So I started by replacing shoes and wheel cylinders. That RR backing plate was bent all to hell, south a hole enlarged where the wheel cylinder fit on top.
So the next weekend, I installed a new backing plate. It looks like the one on the right:
My old drum looks like that, too.
My new drum looks like the one on the left.
So does this imply I have a later stub axle?
Can I just get a drum that looks like the one on the right?
I'll take this drawing to the shop when I exchange the drum.
Not 100% sure of the answer yet, but this is a positive direction and explanation.
I've been wrenching VWs for 50 years but Bay Buses are new to me. Prior owner flubs are common to all models, I am finding!
Thanks, guys, I'll probably find a long trail if this kind of crap...

I would source an OG backing plate. I can’t tell you how many Chinese parts I’ve tried to fit only to find that those people really don’t care when they make it _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

Seems like your present problem is you got the wrong brake drum.
Stub axle length is a separate issue.
However, the inside clamping surface of your old drum looks terrible, suggests there are other problems.
Here's a forum post showing the exact same damage on brake drum, I suggest you have a look at that thread:

WW sells Sebro brand early bay rear drums which are excellent.

I wouldn't put my family in the other reproductions, but those are really nice.

The new backing plate I installed was about twice as thick as the old bent one, and fit really well, so I don't think that is the problem. Given the bad shape (literally) of the plate I took off, this is an improvement! The new one is from WW, PN 211609440D, stated as being for '68-'70. It has the double lip at the perimeter like the one on the right in the diagram above.
The drum measurement doesn't match, so I'll start there. I'll check that other thread and look into exchanging the drum. Who knows the history of a 50 year old used Bus, but I am getting a lesson! |

Neglected follow-up: I got a replacement new drum that fits the new backing plate, and with slight grinding of the new drum for clearance against one part of the backing plate, all is well. |
