Here's a weird one on my '64 variant. I can leave the car sit for a week or more and turn the key and it easily roars to life. But then I'll drive it 15 minutes or so and stop for a while, say an hour, then have to crank it 20 or 30 times for it to start. Super fresh, brand new battery, so that's not related. It's kinda weird. Thoughts? Some thing with pressure in the fuel line?

Check the position of the automatic choke each time.

Is it dual or single carb? I had an issue similar on my Type 1 Ghia {single carb}which was caused by the carb float being marginal and the prolonged heat caused the float to lose its buoyancy and flood the intake. Replacing the float fixed it. But diagnosing the float as the cause, was not until after overhauling the carb and still not fixing the issue.

I'd suspect a fuel pump. It fills the bowl once started and run for a while while driving, so you think all is fine. Fuel in the bowl lets it start later . But if the pump doesn't prime right away it would run dry soon.

Three things to check first:
1. There was a service bulletin out about how to tighten the air cleaners on dual Solexes. Tighten the wing nuts just barely snug and no more. Overtightening can cause all sorts of issues by pulling things out of shape. As the engine warms, expansion exacerbates this.

2. Valve adjustment. Adjust clearance to .006" dead cold. a tight set of valves will work fine on a cold engine, but after a heat spike will drop compression enough at startup to make starting difficult to impossible.

3. Point gap/ ignition timing. Adjust per specs for your model.

If all checks out, or if you correct all this and the issue persists, proceed as follows.
1. Make sure the ignition system is 100% in order. Pull and read the spark plugs. Light tan is good, white is too lean, black is too rich. anything wet could be indicative of a defective ignition cable. Newer condensers and coils that fail hot are, unfortunately, not uncommon.

2. If all in order per Nr. 1, carry some gasoline in a container and, when the issue happens, remove the air cleaner and put a small amount of fuel down each carb. Fires right up? It's a fuel issue. Possibilities are vapor lock, defective fuel pump, fuel draining back to the tank, or carburetors dumping fuel down the carb throats. If the latter, you should notice black smoke when it finally starts.

When the issue happens, try starting it with the throttle pedal all the way to the floor. If you are getting a fuel dump this will help clear it out faster.

If it IS a carburetor or fuel issue, please monitor your oil closely for fuel dilution.

Keep us posted.
