I’m having a issue on a new to me 65 sedan 1600. It’s happened a couple of times where the motor will die under load after driving it for 30 or so minute. It will idle and I can give it throttle with no load and runs fine. It will have to sit for most of the day and all good. I thought it could be Vapor lock, but I don’t know. So I dont drive it all that far.

I’ve read about carb and distributor matching and that is a rabbit whole in its self. But could be the issue.

This is what I have. I had the motor looked over to make sure it was good and cleaned up some small oil leaks. Then I was told it needed the timing advance reduced as it was to much. Not sure if that was compensating for the issue as it didn’t happen before.

Makes me wonder if I have the wrong distributor and should go with this one.
https://www2.cip1.com/vwc-043-905-205/ That has a vacuum advance.

Any help would be appreciated.

Let's start with what you have already; I also run a Solex 30/31 PICT on an adapter on a 1600cc dual port engine, and mine runs good, but I use a vintage German 009 distributor.

Why is your carburetor idle solenoid unplugged?

I would make sure that the choke is set correctly, maybe it's too rich so dies out after warming up.

I'd also try running with the gas cap loose temporarily to see if it's a tank venting issue.

I started to take my carburetor and fuel pump off and took a picture before I got to far. I thought I was having fuel issues, but the fuel pump is good and the carb bowl was full.

I’ll have to check the choke setting and check the fuel cap. Thanks.
