finally got the VW kubelvagen half track built, turned out really nice -
kubelwagens are all convertibles, i comitted the sin of making this a hard top - yes you DO NOT need to put the top down when crossing the north african dessert nor crossing the russian eastern front in the winter, a convertible makes about as much sense as a screen door on a submarine.
note machine gun storage at your knee, plus other guns in the back seat, plus tools and other equipment on back seat
guy has his best friend dog at his side
roof has storage rack with tent poles, ammo can and towing rope, this thing has hooks at all corners, so you know they will be pulling out stuck vehicles all day long
plus lots of thick mud and snow to drive in!!!!!
mud is made from actual yard dirt, mixed with water and white glue
snow is made from flour, mixed with water and white glue

so, finished the kubelwagen half track, now on to the next vw model
no, i bought this bus like 8 years ago, built the engine 1st of course, then it sat until 2001, when i did the "print dip" thing, wrapped it in skulls, super cool i think,
I put eyes on some of the skulls, then cut my finger and dripped real actual blood on the model, no kidding, i am serious!
then the model sat until now,,, patience is everything when building models
this model does not have a ton of parts, so, how to make it stick out, how to make it special, how to make it unique?
I put the same skull patterns on the seats, no easy as they are kinda small and not flat at all.
on the wheels, i sanded down the hub caps, added full covers, and added more skulls, turned out nice i think
then painted the inside red, to get some nice contrast, more coming in that area
then decided to go with "wide whitewalls" on the tires, i have never done whitewalls, 1st time for me, turned out nice i think
this is just the beginning, more crazy is coming!

That's hard-core dedication to the hobby!
Seriously, I like both the skull-bay and the kubel-track. Keep them coming! |

|
|
I am finally ready to share pictures of my latest build - the Revell 23 window bus from 1959. I mention earlier that I had a lot of setbacks with this kit, but in the end I’m glad I invested the extra time to work most of those issues out. Many were my own doing; but others were related to the age of the kit: shrunken/distorted parts didn’t always fit together properly; and old brittle plastic resulting in broken hinges – it’s all are part of the challenge when working with vintage kits.
Blue Baron mentioned this was a rare and expensive kit – one very nice example recently sold on ebay for $140. This build came from a couple partial kits that I bought along with some parts that came off a previously built kit. One of the partial kits had all of the small parts still on the trees but the whole right side and seats were missing. However, this kit came with the rare chrome trim (without the VW emblem on the hub caps like later releases), which most of 23 window kits didn’t get.
The chassis is built from mostly new parts and went together nicely. I ‘borrowed’ a few of John’s chassis details for this build – transmission nose cone, heater tube insulation and hose clamps. The engine is mostly stock Revell except for a scratch-built distributor. I already shared some chassis pics on page 46 but here are a few more:
As you’ve probably noticed already, I typically try to match my build to the box artwork – at least for the first build. This one is no exception. Some liberties (errors?) were taken by the Revell art department - note that the rear jail bars stay in place even though rear hatch is open. The box top shows the boy’s left arm is raised while it’s the right arm in the kit (and his right arm is much, much longer than his left).
Here is the box artwork.
And pictures of the build:

Wow, that is awesome!
I have one of these models (unbuilt) and I never noticed before that it has single piece front door windows on the box. How weird.
Yes, they are expensive.
I used to buy them all the time off eBay, etc a long time ago but stopped hoarding them and sold all of them around 10 years ago for $75-$125 each depending on condition. (None were poor) _________________ How to Post Photos

Bravo! (Standing ovation.)
It's sensational. The pinstripes for the beltline trim could not be better.
Also, while the box art is great, the charm of the actual kit blows it away. I can appreciate the challenges you faced dealing with 60-year-old parts!
Ironically, I just finished my own Revell build, which I'll share next. It doesn't compare to the detail job of yours, but it wasn't intended to be more than a fun project. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

The backstory on this kit is that I had been wanting to build a Revell Rubber Duck/Advent VW van kit for awhile, because I like the yellow color. (Advent was a repackaged Revell with silver plastic rather than chrome parts.)
I had the idea after building my Superbug (page 25) that the Cragars and tires from that kit would look good on the Revell/Advent, replacing the ugly wheels that came on it.
This is basically the fourth generation of the old Revell Microbus kit pictured above, turned into a '70s-style panel. I acquired this particular model as a clean built-up of the Advent kit, and decided to repurpose it as a Coke bus. I bought the Coca-Cola decals from Auto World, and borrowed the wheels and pad-printed tires from a Superbug reissue. The bumpers are resin.
It's ironic that I would finish this when Don finished his. Two sides of the same coin! _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

That was part of the Rubber Duck theme.
Other than a wheel and emblem swap, bumpers and decals, this is basically the Rubber Duck kit.
