I have a 65 beetle. I'm posting in this forum as it has a 1600dp engine with a Bosch alternator with internal regulator. It quit charging a few days ago. I have 12v at the base of the red light, but it does not come on with the key, but I do have 12v (or a bit less) at the D+ terminal on the alternator. When I disconnect the wire from the D+ terminal and ground it, the red light comes on. Which I think tells me that the D+ terminal is not grounded through the alternator, which I think it should be (how else could the red light come on?). I thought maybe a brush problem, so I thought I would replace, but I cannot find any replacement brushes. Can anyone tell me where I can get brushes? either the complete holder/brush assembly or just the brushes (I and solder OK). Pics attached of the brush holder with brushes. Any other thoughts on why these symptoms would be welcome too.

Do you see a Bosch part number anywhere on the alternator?

Your brushes look fine, you have plenty of length left. More likely you need to replace the regulator. Aircooled.net carries (or used to) a handy part that includes the regulator along with the brush assembly, which can be installed without removing and disassembling the alternator, unlike the original regulator for the AL82-type alternators. Soldering new brushes on is quite difficult to do without the solder wicking up into the braided connecting wire and destroying its flexibility. That's why brush wires are typically connected with spot-welds, and not solder.
