In those days it was still common for farmers to use the PTO on their 4WDs for a variety of farm tasks. Splitting wood, pumping water into irrigation ditches, that kind of thing. Many 4wds had the "port" still on their drive trains in the form of a simple cover.

My old farm truck has a PTO cover plate on the side of the trans. No PTO, only the option to install one.

I had a PTO that I bought for my Syncro, but never ended up installing it. It came with the Bowden cable and a modified slider rail in order to clearance the PTO output. I traded mine to Lucas at GoWesty a number of years ago. I don't think he has ever installed it on any of his Syncro Vanagons.

I bought mine from a Finnish guy and had it shipped over.

Now we just need to see a picture of something actually attached to the PTO Very Happy

I wonder if this service manual was ever updated for later years?

Rumor has it that an Olympia Syncro had this PTO mower attachment.
The Word on the street is, Seller graciously declined to mention this (and the Dual Mass Flywheel) in the auction because these two special
items would have inflated the value significantly to the point where the
common feller can’t afford a Syncro.

I wonder that rare PTO option uses the same gear and pieces that were originally designed for the automatic coupling feature, maybe repurposed. Hmmm.

I would guess a PTO option would be a requirement for military or some other "fleet" use, like forestry service.

Good stuff Cool

If you've ever followed "Landrover's" original military options they had trailers connected by their PTO to drive the axle on the tralers making the whole rig 6wd.
Then again Landrover original options catalog had 4,500 options...

I'm a little late to the discussion...

The English Service Manual was a great find.

Here is the same (English) file, cleaned up, OCR'd and indexed: https://hanswibo.asuscomm.com/index.php/s/pXwpLD8pS7Qcwtc

And here is the German equivalent: https://hanswibo.asuscomm.com/index.php/s/AYg4fpBpfPwf2PK
