My 67 on the Erco's. Way back when....
I'm planning on making the apron removable on my 65' also.
2109 76x94, 48 IDA's. Been on the bench for awhile. Going back in to service for the 65.

Got the undercoating off. Original color.. L-572
I think that's what color its going back to. OG Panama beige
Sometimes it takes hours, on the smallest thing. Tried welding a bolt to a broken fender bolt. Twisted the nut out of the body.... Ended up taking it out completely. Ran a tap through it. Put it back in, worked the metal back around it. Tight! No weld. Good to go..

Been jumping around some. Had to get away from the door for a minute. Had use of a stud gun.. actually still have it... its my brothers. Pulled a few low spots. Much better! A lot less filler..
I have, no back story on this car at all. I've had it since the late 90's..
I wish I had the badge that was on here at some point. I saw this listed on the samba. Pretty sure thats "not " what was on there.
I've been sort of dreading having to replace the hood seal channels. Was going to go with the Mexican beetle seal, then said nahhhhh. And I would have had to replace the channel on the cowl anyway.
Took a piece of stainless sheet, sharpened the edge. Used a cut-off, ground the old channel thin. Then cut through, hammering my sheet metal chisel through. Lots of rust underneath.
After shining the metal up, where the new welds would be, I masked off the clean parts, and coated the black rust with rust converter/inhibitor. Whatever you want to call it. Drilled some holes in the new J piece. And sprayed the back of it, with good old rattle can rustoleum.
"You shouldve' had that blasted." Yes ....I know.
Got some good welds on it. (Without ruining anything) Could've been better if I had another set of hands to hold. Couldnt get the right angle on the gun that I wanted, because of how I had it clamped. Oh well, going to grind it off any ways..
1 down, 2 to go.

Aftermarket....always needs extra work. Wolfsburg!!! Things you don't notice, till its time to put them in for real. There was no way it was going to line up with the body gasket channel, where it was. Drill and move...
Note the rust forming under the channel. And that's a new panel.

All 3 of my J channels are in. Not the prettiest, but you won't see much of them when the rubber is in.
Time to break out the gloves. I've been trying to wear gloves from here on out, whenever sanding or touching the car. Stripped the wolfsburg west black paint off.
Plan is to get everything shined back up, and coat it with tru cure.
Front apron will go on for good, once I get the spare tire area cleaned up how I want it.
Finally stopped raining, and got over 60 degrees! Couldn't resist putting it on the ground and sticking the fenders on.
Going to need to raise it a bit..
A couple throwback pictures, from when I moved from my shop in town, to my house. Good thing we painted that garage since then. That looks like $%@t

yeah looks great! How many hands is the apron from the floor? Mine is about 5/8 of a hand, wrist towards finger tips. _________________ -'85 c10 5.3 LS, 222 cam, long tubes, x pipe, 3 inch spin tech's

I'm not really sure. It will definitely have to come up some. I love the way it looks down that low, but its not practical, on WV roads. |

Been cleaning the trunk area up..
More PO stereo repair. Must have been a support bracket for a "Craig" 8-track player. It looked as if the installer used a 16d spike, and punched the holes through. It left some nice sharp metal underneath, which rusted over time. I got fed up with chasing the hole... Ended up cutting in to something solid.
Leaning towards the original color. Getting ready for sticker shock. I figure about $1000 total for material
Welcome! My wife buys new ones all the time. I wont throw them away. I use them in the garage to stand on...Re-purpose!!

Not much progress since April. Was thinking back then, I'd have paint on it by now. Ha!! Trying to get back on it.
Been trying to keep an eye out for some "German" front fenders, but we all know about shipping, rust, etc. Going to fix what I have. Got a nasty crease, from a tire looks like, and some rust because of past bondo use.
Worked on opening the edge up, last night. Probably going to need some metal cut out. Overall the fender is solid. The rust is because of PO's bondo work. Got some holes, that aren't going to weld up, without blowing through. And as a bonus, we have some brazing to. Yay!!

I put a couple hours in last night. Hard to tell from the pics, but it looks better. Had to cut it and open the edge. Got a nice tear going. The metal was really squished.
Got my little home made mini-press to try and straighten the edge and give me something to hold on to.. while shaping the lip.

Started stitching it back together. Its not perfect, but should have something solid to put some filler on. Better than having a flat spot with a 1/4" of bondo in the wheel opening.
I'll probably close the edge a little tighter. Looks like its "open" too far.
Some more welding, tap out a few more dents, we'll be ready to fill. |
