Hi there.
I purchase a Australian vw type 3 squareback 1971.
It drove well for a few weeks but after that I had problems starting.
I turn the key and start but when I release the key stops!!!
Only sometimes.
There it’s one wire from ignition switch it’s not connected, black and white.
I dismantled all to have a look, if I pull the hole ignition switch from the colum
Starts, but if I fit it on place stop.
There it’s also a wire connected to the stearin column, I got one connector
Attached to a long plastic strip, not sure where this go as well.
Hope it make sense.
Thanks for help!!!! |

I had a similiar issue, where I would turn to start and nothing, if i hold this many seconds or move to the start multiple times I would get a 1/2 second start then nothing. I had to pull the ignition switch out and dismantle till you get to the contact points in the switch. cleaned and relube. Be very gentle as these parts are old and like to break. |

The '71 switch is a 1-year only part, and can be hard to find. There are Chinese plastic-housed switches that seem to work. You can also take a Bug switch and crimp on the right wiring connections to fit a '71. Some details here:

Similar issues, so I have to remove switch. But how? I’m looking but can’t find instructions.
Can anybody point me?

Bentley covers it pretty well.
What year is your car/column? |

68 Square, stock (as far as I know) column.
It’s not the whole switch I need but the electrical portion.
The symptoms: Turn key to crank, cranks all day. Release the key to run, and nothing. Have to slowly, gently release pressure on the key. Hopefully you’ll hit the sweet spot and it starts right up.
It’s been like that since I had the car, but the sweet spot seems to be getting smaller and harder to hit over the years.
(Or I’m just a creaky old man who can’t hit it like I used to.) _________________ Everything known to man has been written.

Tom, you have to pull the whole thing out, then take the small nearly hidden screw out to remove the electrical part of the ignition switch. The rest is either covered in the brown Bentley, or in KTPhil's post of replacing the switch here in the forum somewhere.
I hope this helps. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Thanks Bob.
Thanks for confirming my (almost worst) nightmare. I was hoping it wouldn’t come to that.
Yeah, thanks a lot.

Do you have any pics of it? Just asking as Supa Ninja posted some pics of an Aus unit that he installed in his own car, that was based on beetle parts. Most of us here (in the USA) have the German set up, and pics are posted of them. I don't know enough about the Aus unit to know of any differences from the German style. A lot of Aus parts are all by themselves, as mandated (way back when) for "local" manufacture, to qualify for it being an Australian built car/vehicle. This includes paint and interior parts as well. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof
