I have an '02 Jetta TDI with worn 1st and 2nd gear synchros. I have access to an '02 Golf 2.0L gas transaxle, how close are the gear ratios?

I do not know what transmission you have but 020 transmission first gears are all the same, there are two different 2nd gears and I believe one is a 2.1 and the other option is a 1.9. I'm not even going to research to prove I am right so if someone points out I am wrong, believe them.

You may get better answers if you posted what transmission you was thinking about swapping.

The 020 were in the early mkIII 2.0 cars, and not in any of the TDI mkIII's. Most likely an 02A tranny. You'd need to consult a Bently of some online source to be sure what the ratios for each are.
And being you have a mkIV, it will be an 02A, as an 020 would never fit those.

the first couple pages of section 34 of the Bently manual lists all the trans and gear ratios for the 02J but you need the 3 letter code off the trans...2.0's and diesels vary some have 3.389 final drives and some have 4.235's....each gear varies too...got an 04 tdi and an 04 2.0 myself ....the gas car you're in fifth on 55mph country roads, the tdi doesnt want 5th till the interstate
