What is the difference between a 1950's hood and an Oval window hood..

Trying to purchase one and need to know if I have the right hood.

Thanks

ok, a split hood is going to have 3 mounting bolt holes on each hinge and another one for the prop arm on the drivers side, also will have a little triangle shaped reinforcement piece where the VW emblem goes, the reinforcement triangle went away in 1956 along with the extra bolt hole for the prop, I think they went to 2 bolt hinges in '53, in '56 the prop rod used the front bolt hole for the hinge, the VW emblem on a split hood has 3 mounting slots in a triangle and before '51 there was no provision for the Wolfsburg emblem above the handle, My standard '52 split has a 1950 deluxe hood on it, anyone have a '52 standard hood to trade me before I fill in the chrome holes?

Also the bracing up near the windshield is smaller on a split hood.

I have two split hoods with everything......

1. The triangle extra support for the emblem
2. The three bolt holes for the hinges.
3 The extra bolt hole for the hood support on drivers side. (making 4)
4. The two slots for badge by hood handle.
5. They both have holes downthe center for a chrome strip.

BUT....... 1. Has 4 tabs for VW emblem
2. Has 3 tabs for VW emblem

Both are also tabs not pins.

WHY THE DIFFERENCE?

ovalslider, sell me both of them and I will try to find out ...
I'm guessing one is newer than the other, maybe the 4 slot one is a Zwitter hood

I sure hope not. Because the 3 tab is my baby and I have a Zwitter that needs the hood. I am selling the 4 tab. I'm not sure wheter to be original and use the 3 tab that needs body work. Or save money and use the perfect non original hood? If either is so.

since i checked the split fender threads here, i learned what was the difference between an oval, a split and a later fender.

i know this is a very old thread, but are there size differences between a split front hood and a later hood? and i am not referring to the earlier discussed checkpoints.
did anyone take measurements as width and length? any handle holes positioning difference between a split and a later front hood?
i have troubles making my 1960 4tab front hood close shut without having large gaps on the sides, and i began wondering whether the split hood is somewhat shorter or longer? i know i have an incorrect one and maybe that's why it's so difficult aligning it.

I have noticed a lot of gaps, mostly on the hood prop side which I assume comes from metal fatigue from folks forgetting to release the prop first and/or from times it is left open (fuel, etc.). Who hasn't seen the infamous " I forgot to release the prop rod" hood rip Embarassed . When you think of the size of the hood and fairly flimsy they are it's amazing how well they do fit after 50+ years.

HI

I have a split hood with two round holes just about the handle, not slots.
It has the triagle and the third prop hole too.
Anybody know what year this would be, are the two round holes original?

thanks

Picking up on an old thread. I'm trying to find out what is the correct hood for a Zwitter and if pre or post zwitter hoods can be used providing that the right handle and trim are put on.

Three bolts for the hinges must have been exchanges for the 2 hole version during 1953. I has seen a original zwitter from dec 52. the hood had 3 boltholes but it had 2 hole hinges mounted so it must have been on its way in dec 52.

Big question is when they changed from 3 to 4 pins for the VW emblem.
As far as I know all the 3 pins were solid and the 4 pins are all cut enabling the hood colour to be visible inside the emblem.

it would increase your chances of an answer if you post photos showing the inside and outside of the vw badge area and also the hinge mounts

This could be a standard hood that had chrome added.

Are the chrome holes perfectly round? Factory holes are perfect, but 99.9% of drilled holes are not if the chrome has been added
