That bus is a real 21. Ive seen plenty of paint filled stampings and missing Mcode plates is par for the course on buses that have been restored or customized or otherwise monkeyed with. Anything that can be removed can easily get lost. In any case it sold for $140k which is good money for an otherwise mediocre deluxe with a gross interior. |
What can happen is a stolen real 21 can go missing for many years, and then someone finds a legit VIN number of a junked, or wrecked bus to re-badge the stolen one.
State of CA can be fooled as easily as anyone as far as the inspections go, they don't know what they're looking at. I wonder if it had a salvage title.
I'm not saying that this is what happened on that particular Bus, only that this very thing has happened in the past, and is not something I would want to have to try and explain if selling it again in the future. _________________ "OG = Original German" -- TheSamba.com dictionary |

One of the other things to mention on the VIN stamping in the engine compartment is typically 7’s always look like one of these pics below (with the small, vertical line attached to the beginning of the 7) unlike the VIN on the BAT bus. It would be interesting to know if anyone has a different version of a 7 in their VIN from these pics below.

Typically restamped VINs or even restamped engine cases mess up 4’s. Maybe we can add 7’s to the list too. |

For what it’s worth the stamping in my 60 double cab engine compartment doesn’t have the vertical bit on the “7.” The numbers you show are all later I believe, maybe the stamping changed? _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Looks like a burnt bus to me. Melted VIN plate and warped rusted out stamping in the rear. Wonder how much bondo is on there to 'fix' the panels. |
If it’s like most buses, a lot. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

I took a look at this 21 window yesterday in person.
The pictures posted make it look nicer than it is. It has runs in the paint and tons of chips. This doesn't include the numerous things that are wrong with it.
However, most of the public loves shiny paint. _________________

This is an honest Bus. The bulkhead and interior are awful, but there are no secrets. Curious to see how this one does. _________________ "OG = Original German" -- TheSamba.com dictionary |
