Does it screw in from the bottom or top is the ultimate question?
I'm upgrading my radio and want to upgrade my OG speaker but don't want to rip the dash apart to do it
Thx |

Depends.
In some cases there are studs hanging down that the speaker attaches to and are fixed so you can spin the nuts sometimes they are bolts that spin with the nut. There’s only one way to find out for sure and that’s by trying. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Yep it really depends, what the previous owner did.
I don't remember how it is originally, but I surely know mine is bolted with an adapter from above, so no way changing it without removing the dash pad.
I thought the original one was held in by some sort of clamp from below? _________________ Vlad's 72 Ghia (Once in a Lifetime Restoration topic)

Yes, the original speaker in my '67 is held in place by a 'U'-shaped wire clip that snaps into place under the speaker's coil housing. Not sure if the later cars used the same setup though.
It's unlikely that an aftermarket speaker would be able to use the clip anyway, seeing that it was designed to work with that one specific OEM speaker.
Removing the dash pad from a '74 isn't really a big deal...just undo a few nuts from inside the dash, then remove the two screws in the door jambs. _________________ '63 Ragtop (current)

If you need the speaker, I believe RetroSound has one for the dash. _________________ '74 Zambezi green Ghia vert, autostick, 101k

UPDATE - Had a chance this weekend to test and YES you can remove the speaker without touching the dashpad. My OEM speaker was held up by a small nut off of a hanging bracket. Took out the radio, undid the nut and the speaker fell right out. It was a 20 min job start to finish. _________________ Join the 74 KGhia Registry - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1O4MQepBrAnwCKn9EXzSVPUmVA_oUOJU-WrmFUxON-qQ/edit#gid=0 |

I really don't know. I've used RetroSound radios in the past and they fit nicely so I presume the same with the speakers.
But it appears that the OEM speaker was a standard size so I suggest taking it out and then taking it to your local Audio store to see what they think. _________________ Join the 74 KGhia Registry - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1O4MQepBrAnwCKn9EXzSVPUmVA_oUOJU-WrmFUxON-qQ/edit#gid=0 |

Is that the only speaker you have? None in the kick panels/doors? _________________ '74 Zambezi green Ghia vert, autostick, 101k
