I have an 83.5 Westy with the hard GoWesty Derlin bushings that was advertised 'never needs grease'.
Well they don't work that well anymore...plus GoWesty stopped selling them.
So I am looking into OEM shift bushing with OEM bellow boots from Buslab.

This shift rod boot can be retrofitted to an 83.5-86, but you may need to space the shift rod bushing support 6.5mm forward if you have the early transaxle case with the narrow shift rod support mount. If this is not done the rear boot will be compressed tightly and not allow the transaxle to get fully into 2nd or 4th. |
I have never really heard of this before but I might give it a shot. I was thinking about using .25" stainless steel to make the spacer.
Has anyone done this mod before? Also, I didn't realize there was a difference in transaxle cases after 86.

I have that setup. Daryl of AA (RIP) put the spacers in during my first rebuild, and I added the bellows when I rebuilt the whole shifting assembly afterwards
I'm not certain where the difference is, my Syncro trans case seemed to measure the same as my '84 2wd one. Maybe the rear shift rod is different?
It really does matter though.

Yes, as mentioned by ZsZ, you gotta buy 2 longer bolts and use 2 M8 nuts as spacers so the rear boot is not compressed, otherwise it's b=very hard to get into 2nd and 4th, you're fighting the rear boot. _________________ Silicone Steering Boots and 930 Cv boots for sale in the classifieds.

Here is an image I annotated. I had to do this on my 1984 Westy after adding the rubber boots to the rear linkage. Now it shifts properly. I believe I got this image from the samba but put my own notations on it for the parts needed. Where I put broken was the shifter part we also replaced. Make sure you mount the linkage on the correct side of the linkage bracket, see photo. Hope it helps. _________________ 1984 Westy Wolfsburg, owned since 1987. FAS 2.0 NA engine conversion in 2022. |

I saw afterwards it's a 2WD, so it might be the RMW mount they were selling back then. _________________ Silicone Steering Boots and 930 Cv boots for sale in the classifieds.

I had a friend try to install the bellows on his 85 with the stock bushing mounts and resulted in a very stiff shifting van he ended up removing them to make the van shift well. I compared a set of Syncro shift bushing shells that came with the bellows to the set on his van and found that they were different between the two. _________________ 1985 2wd Westy with 2000 Subaru 2.2 current driver

Strange. My 83.5 adapted pretty easily with the spacer method mentioned here in the thread. Shifting is perfect. Maybe your friend put the shift bracket on the wrong side, near the trans. _________________ Brandon

From another perspective. As simple as the boots and bushing appear, they are not quickly swapped out. I have them on our 82 with the later 4 speed and the boots did not last actually retaining dirt and water once they split. I also went through the GW bushings on the syncro and over a few months they seized the shift shaft GW made good on them.
So I’m installing the original soft bushings with no boots now. I know they will hold up better than the bellow boots and I can see the bushings and shaft. Cleaning and lubing is easier than replacing boots on a regular basis. Your results may vary. _________________ ☮️ |
