|

Just picked up this 1993 5 speed Westfalia new to me , w/ 217k new clutch , runs good, no rust. original paint-
__All fluids are clean and topped off. ___
Looking and reading posts:
1) Are yall carrying extra relays , belts , sensors?
2) what sensors should I just go ahead and order? ( which are hard to find?)(which should I check or suspect of going out quick)?
3) max tire size with a 15" wheel? Want a off-road look
4) Flashing oil pressure light ( P/O says its in the cluster possibly as he soldiered some things back there already in cluster.
5) Flashing coolant light ( P/O says its a coolant level sensor on top of trans ) engine temp stays in middle or under.
6)front wheel bearing swap ( making loud meow noise ) Too involved for dyi?
7) Any way to get lower RPMS on the hwy?
Are these 2.5s easy to drop & rebuild ? or is it better to swap them out ?
9) Any upgrades I should add to this as a semi daily driver ? Trans cooler ? Engine oil temp gauge ?
Thanks for your help

Just maintain it and drive it. _________________

Why not just make a custom set of wires with a Y splice in them. Then you could just run one distributor. |
I don't think electrickery works that way |

Items that fail on VW=plastic coolant flanges
I would carry your ecm and fuel pump relay, ignition switch, coil, pickup, zip ties, some wire and connectors as start. I just replaced parts and kept the old ones as spares. I had my new coil fail and the backup kept me off a truck.
I wouldn’t worry about rebuilding unless you actually have low oil pressure(check with mech gauge)
I had to solder my cluster 3 times to fix the coolant light
Wheel bearings aren’t the worst but having even a cheap bearing tool kit makes it easy
I also agree the shift linkage bushings, luckily if they fail zip ties can save you for a little. |

Is it just the coils that are finicky, or would/should you carry an extra distributor cap/rotor as well? |

Cap and rotor just wear out. It wouldn’t be a fail item. When I disassembled the failed coil the power wire from the module to the conector broke. |

My coil failed also shift bushings..shift lever also failed twice. It it's running and driving fine I would not worry..also check drive belt .I carry a spare. LUB the gas cap also. Also check the timing belt , should be tight.if not changed early 5 cyl don't have intruder engines but later 95 on do.but the engine could have been changed..Good Luck...Bill |

Probably this guy. If the bushing fails the rod just falls out.
