Whats going on with the rearmost outrigger? It doesn't have a center piece.

I think the transmission mount is the very early version before chassis +/- 4000.... and the full width U beam on top of the rear torsion tube is so weird that it could be a prototype or a super mega early chassis.

yes, that chassis is very odd, and likely very early as you mention.

by 1950/51 I don't think VW was using the small mushroom air cleaner much if at all, I would expect to see a "T" filter or a "cyclone"...although anything is possible. Maybe its a prototype '49 display chassis?

The cut-away engines are usually not consistent on strict period correctness of the items. They are a representation of mechanical principles and construction not period correctness. I would expect the same for a chassis.

When I was hauling my kids and there friends around their friends would try and slam shut the cargo doors like an American car/truck. Even after I told them not too. Even my kids would tell them, but you know teenagers, In one ear and out the other. I got pretty grouchy about it and I think I might have been known for it around the neighborhood. Laughing

Great image Everett, one of my favorite photos, any info on it? Other than German motorcycles.

I don't know but agree it's a super cool photo.

My 1st thought is it's a Zundapp promotional shot but it's weird (to me) they don't show the entire Bus in it.
