The DIN cage is usually the metal cage that comes with single din radios when you don't have mounting "ears" to screw the radio in. Right now mine is just flopping around in the hole because I cant figure out a way to secure it.
I bought a trim piece like the one you posted but I had to cut all the plastic off the sides to get it to fit, and it doesn't really stay on. |

I'm still not happy with the trim piece I made for mine, and the unit isn't held in place with any fasteners, so it flops around. The stereo itself is pretty cool, but my install is sketchy at best. _________________ Casey--

Yeah, I was able to get the metal cage affixed to the trim piece, but the whole assembly is not really secured well in the dash. If I bang on top of the dash a few times it pops out _________________ Old: 1986 Vanagon Westfalia Weekender

vans back in the shop so i can't play around with it, but i'll be trying to squeeze that sucker in there when(if) its back. in summer maybe i'll try something more secure, but i have a feeling i may end up going a different direction and build a carputer with a screen somewhere more usefull than the stock location.
i did find out i have the 6 disk changer under the passenter seat though by accident. is there some kind of adapter that can use that input as auxiliary? |

I just finished installing a SONY XAV-AX100 6.4" display touch screen head unit with CARPLAY and Android Auto in my 2001 Eurovan Weekender. This is a single DIN radio with a Double DIN display that with some cutting will fit in the Weekender. |
Install looks great! Just wondering if you know the length from the front of the stereo to where the metal crossbar is? Want to make sure my stereo isn't too big to fit in there.
Cheers, J |

I dont off hand but I need to pull it out at some point to reconnect my RCA for the sub. I will try to remember to measure and post back when that happens |

I would really like to mount a fancy double DIN Panasonic unit I already have.
I know this is a bad idea but...
What is that metal support bar that gets in the way? Is it a true structural piece of the front end, or can it be hacked way to make room for a full double DIN unit? |

Hi! I'm reviewing your post. I'm so confused tho— the Sony unit spec says it's 4" deep.
I'm measuring the hole in the dash, from flush to that metal bracket in the back that divides the space side-to-side in the center, and the depth I'm measuring is 2 1/3 inches.
But these radios measure it 4+ inches deep.
How did you get that flush?
I'll post this to the original post too. I just wanted to make sure you saw it. I'd love your input on this if you can and you care to please.
Thanks!

These Sony XAV units are a bit unique in the form factor, making them a good choice for upgrades to the stock stereo system, with minimal to no permanent modifications. The touch screen is makes the unit appear to be a double DIN form factor but the main chassis of the unit is only single DIN, and relatively shallow at around 4" (+ a bit more for wire routing). The screen actually cantilevers down from the chassis. Hard to describe in words but if you scroll through the pics at the link below you'll see what I mean:
https://www.crutchfield.com/S-lTU2sp4N7eB/p_158XAV1000/Sony-XAV-AX1000.html#&gid=1&pid=5
It may not be the exact model but the XAV family all have similar form factors.
If you're lucky/patient enough to source an OEM trim bezel for the HVAC controls that eliminates the little cubby between the HVAC controls and the radio, you can make this radio upgrade with no permanent changes to your dash. These are hard to find though (european parts/junk yards are your best bet).
Otherwise, you can simply trim the existing bezel (basically cut off the cubby) to remove the interference with the cantilevered screen. If you are careful about cutting and finishing the edge cleanly, it will look "stock" to most any person.
If you're worried about originality, you can always make the mod to the stock trim, source a new trim bezel (from US used parts specialists) to keep on hand with the stock radio for eventual restoration to stock. |

Someone mentioned earlier about the 99-05 Jetta (and several other models) AC controls. If you go that route, you don't have to do any custom fabrication. These controls are doubly useful if you have removed your rear cabin heater. See below.

So, this isn't gonna garner a lot of love, but I wanted to add a front facing camera, and this can do that. The screen can be moved up and down, and obviously side to side. I installed the Sony in our Passat.
I think the whole Istanbul taxi motif is really coming together. _________________ Casey--

I was wrong about this. The Jetta controls are different--the recirc/AC buttons are narrower, so the Jetta bezel does not fit on the Eurovan controls. And the Jetta controls are just not swappable--the wiring and cables are all different.
I think my photo above is of a cut down Eurovan Winnebago AC control faceplate. I'm now going through this mod and this is how I will be doing it as well---with the original faceplate, cut down (to remove the rear heater controls).

Update:
I've completed my Sony double-din installation.
The radio is the Sony XAV-AX1000 (not the 100, but the 1000) which is an older model, but it has an actual button/knob on the front, and front USB and aux inputs. The newer Sony XAV models no longer have these front features, so I bought the older model.
The bezel is the American International VWK1015. I tried about five different bezels. This one was the best. It still required trimming off the lower ears.
When the right trimming is done, using a Dremel with a cutoff wheel, the bezel will snap into place in the double din opening in the dash. This is all that's needed to keep things in place. With correct snap-in fit, your last step will be to install the radio head into the bezel, screw the bezel to the radio on the sides using Sony's low profile screws, connect your wiring harnesses, and then slide the whole thing into place.
I did not use any of the metal cages normally used to hold the radio. The bezel snap-in fit was sufficient to keep this setup nice and tight.
This is a Winnebago camper, so the heater controls were formerly two dials above the three main climate controls. I completely removed the rear heater from this van, putting a U shaped piece of heater hose to complete the coolant circuit where the heater once was under the slider, and capping off the intake and output openings with sheet aluminum, sealed with silicone and screwed down with sheet metal screws. The camper stateroom flooring was replaced and there is no evidence of the old heater now.
I used a tile saw, with a water cooled blade, to cut the heater control faceplate down to accommodate the double din bezel. The water cooled blade kept the plastic melting down while making accurate, fast cuts.
The old heater controls had an illumination circuit which served nicely to connect to the Sony's illumination wire, so that the double din radio auto-dims when the dash lights are turned on.
For those who are wondering, the ScanGauge III is great. Just use double sided 3M VHB tape to adhere it to the ashtray (which I imagine is useless for most drivers) and you're set. It comes out of the box ready to read Eurovan trans fluid temps.
The other thing in the upper left is a ham radio.

How far out does the Scan Gauge protrude?
Also: who do you talk to on the Ham radio? |

See the photo below for ScanGauge clearance. I may rearrange the ScanGauge and the ham radio to other spots. They are just attached with Dual Lock velcro right now.
I'm kind of amazed at how much wasted space there is on these dash faces. In a way, it creates lots of opportunities for change. But I am always surprised at how a lot of Eurovan owners just do nothing and put up with multiple switch blanks next to the defroster switch, or the useless tiny cubbies next to the cig lighter or above the climate controls. Then you look elsewhere in the van and these same owners are fighting for space in other ways.
I talk to other hams on the ham radio. It has been extremely useful for long distance trips.

Thanks for the additional photo. I'd like to add a scan guage, but at my age I think I'd need it higher up, so that I wouldn't take my eyes off the road.
I messed around with CB radios in my youth, and use marine VHF now. Dedicated coms are nice to have when off the beaten path, or when cell phones are unreliable. |

Was the trans temp just ready out of the box for you? Or if its an x gauge did you auto scan or manually enter codes to get a reading? Im getting nothing when I auto scan so I went ahead and manually entered the pre 08 vw iso code on the scanguage website, but when i click on it it says is empty so id assume that didn't work or maybe the sensor isn't working/installed? |

Howdy,
For me, with the Scangauge 3, the X-gauge setup was a matter of scanning. I remember it being quite easy. There was no manual entry of codes with the Scangauge 3 product. It has been working very well and I have enjoyed knowing my true trans temps.
