Hi,
I bought a 65 Ghia coupe recently (absolutely love it), and I struggle to identify what type of engine do I have: (want to add AC to it, and wish to make it stronger)
- The engine number is 9034988, which leads to 1200cc (but the stamping looks dodgy to me)
- The car license say 1285cc
- The exhaust came with it is an Empi 4 tip monza (which according to what I checked fits only in 1300-1600cc engines
- The intake tubes looks as those who fits 1200cc single port heads (straight not curved connectors).
Can anyone help a frustrated guy?
Good news (1300cc and above) will always be better (-;
Pics attached
Many thanks
Aviad

Engine code guide indicates ‘9’ being correct for 1965 model year. Your looks to be mostly complete and unmolested so I would think it could be the original engine. Although you never know what a previous owner did until you start digging (replace pistons, cylinders, heads, etc.).
Older engine cases always seem to corrode around the serial numbers but yours looks like original VW stamping.
If you really want to add AC you would greatly benefit from more CC’s. Pistons, cylinders, and dual port heads for 1600 would be first on my list. Then you would need all the accompanying bits like manifolds, bigger carb and cylinder tins.
In my opinion, if you want air just roll the windows down… |
