Not the end of the world yet but over the last year my '95 has started an occasional hiccup when idling. Like about a chug every 4 seconds. It also my stumble going up hills if the RPMs are not above 3000. Otherwise van is torquey and strong(its all relative.)
The symptoms appear:
-after a longer ride at full temperature(not really engine thermometer as it is fine after hitting normal temps but after a longer roadtrip)
-under load, going up hills
-if its warm or hot outside
-car runs better when air is cold
-if it's beginning to lug at lower RPMS (under 3000)
-91 octane seems to help a little
-the vacuum hoses were replaced and that made it run a bit stronger and smoother EXCEPT for the farts. Hoses were really trashed
-Timing belt, idler pulleys and AC were replaced but really had no effect on it.
anything I check before I ask mechanic? Like coilpacks, sparks, o2 temp sensor. I noticed this van has an IAC but no MAF air sensor.
-Fuel filter was done about 10k miles ago
It has gotten better with some of the little fixes but any ideas are appreciated.
Thanks for ideas! |

Have you looked at the coil, wires, distributor cap, rotor, etc? It could be an intermittently "leaking" spark somewhere. A spray bottle with water will help find those.
Another possibility is that the MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor in the ECU is failing. They are known to go bad and can cause problems like this. There's a writeup somewhere on this forum showing how to do a DIY replacement of just the sensor for about $25 of parts from eBay. If you search my profile name you'll find me commenting on it from when I did a preventative replacement of the sensor. |

Thanks for your input. So I would spray the ignition area, with engine running and try to create the stumble as a short or something?
I will look up your suggestions, they sound totally manageable! |

Right, I'd start at the plug wire for cylinder 1, then work my way towards the distributor cap. Once that's been misted well, hit the coil wire and the coil (which lives in front of the battery).
If you do this while it's dark, you'll see the sparks quite well. |

Superb! Thanks and the write up the the ECU/sensor thing is great. |
