During the course of a rebuilt engine install, I passed the rear bumper numerous times on the way underneath the Van. Looked like it was time for a glamour touch up.
Browsed The Samba for info, didn't wanna do fiberglass, JB Weld it is.
Started off with some cracks, some fiber showing, coupla tabs missing, nothing major. Filled, filed and sanded, then a coat of gray primer, more filling, etc. Used rattle can Rustoleum Primer & Paint, more sanding. The problem with a job like this is that every time the last coat of paint dries you see a spot that you could sand a little off, fill in a little there, times infinity. At some point you have to say, "Good enough for who it's for". At least, that's what happened here.

Snugged CV bolts to 35ft/lb after putting on some miles after recently replacing all 4 joints.
Cleared plugged tranny vent (which may explain gear oil previously found in DS boot)…
Used exhaust heat wrap tape to <finally> quiet down nagging exhaust leak at #3 head…
Finally, verified trans oil level, prepped & packed for visit & weekend meetup in S. MN…

Where did the $1 piece of hose go... inquiring minds want to know... CrankCase Vent hose, or some hidden vacuum hose hiding near the Aux Air Valve.... _________________ '68 Westy- my first VW and vehicle/Bus- long gone.- sold it to a traveling Swiss couple....

Replaced my broken original headlights with the GoWesty H4 ones.
And I noticed a drop of oil on my brand new van cafe oil pan drain plug. So i tightened it down to torque and did a little test spin. All signs point to it being fixed now.

PO had done a number with certain things pertaining to lack of emissions, like running double muffler, no cat, no 02 sensor. They'd also removed the AC components in the engine bay. When removing AC components, they'd also removed the Y hose coming off the idle boost and AC boost (on 85 1.9, white boxes behind AFM) which connected to a T/hose coming off the intake manifold. Manifold T was capped and boost valve was left open. Ran short piece of vac hose off the T (the piece i got for a buck), fitting a smaller diameter piece (which I had) into it and connecting to the idle boost valve. working well for now.
regarding the Aux Air Valve, I had checked that and the curved, almost 90* piece of hard rubber down there was definitely cracked and for now that gap is filled with some silicone.
Perfect, no. but working and not stalling, yes. driving with WAY more power, yep _________________ so many roads i know

Ah, I see. Congratulations on it running great and not stalling. That's sometimes a long battle to overcome as you get rid of old leaking parts. _________________ '68 Westy- my first VW and vehicle/Bus- long gone.- sold it to a traveling Swiss couple....

removed a sticky lifter, replaced said lifter, put back together. No compression. 2 whole lashes got me up to 120 and the lifter noise has stopped. _________________ so many roads i know

Today I finish my suspension project. First time installing suspension on a Vanagon. All parts removed are original 1987 parts. Will be doing alignment tomorrow but during my test drive, night and day difference. T3 technique Anti-Sway bar with T3 HD end link made a huge difference. Powerflex from T3, Schwenk Springs and Bilstein XHD from Gowesty. Also replace the powesterring rack bushing with Powerflex.

Removed cabinets and rear bench for the local VW specialist to replace panels, repair some pretty nasty rust and give her a new paint job.
Apparently the cabinets and rear seat haven’t been removed since the last ‘80’s because I found this gem:
Pretty certain the last time I saw don Johnson was 1988!
Here is the long shot of the removed equipment:
And an overview of the rusty destruction behind the cabinets:

[Yesterday] I inspected my house battery charge wiring, found one a bit overheated looking, so I replaced it with nice fat wire and appropriate lugs. I'll keep an eye on it to see how it is looking.
Next, I fished a new supply +wire for house battery power to my over-the-slider white+red lights+2xUSB ports module that I have in the fresh air outlet.
Last, I tested the dash light that indicates low fluid level, by using turkey baster to remove a couple quarts of coolant from my aluminum expansion tank. Blinky light did the blinky thing like it should, test complete and coolant back into tank. _________________ '87 Westy 'Flossie','86 Westy 'R1','86 tintop GL - Subi2.2 'J2','83.5 stock tintop L 'ZoomBus','74 Karmann Ghia, '63 Notch |

I filled up my washer fluid for the first time, and it all poured out of the tank. New tank and gaskets and it all works.
Also I replaced my broken e brake cover.

On the '87, I finally got the ONE WIRE pulled to move my cockpit accessories over to the House Battery. How come it took me two hours today, as well as 23 months since I put the House Battery in to do it? Ugh!
Just in case, I puled three wires. I don't want to be lacking if/when I decide to run more connections from cockpit to cabin! All tucked in under the carpet and front heater housing cover. Nothing to see here. _________________ '87 Westy 'Flossie','86 Westy 'R1','86 tintop GL - Subi2.2 'J2','83.5 stock tintop L 'ZoomBus','74 Karmann Ghia, '63 Notch |

Put these wheels and tires on the "project" van. Much better!
Build thread coming soon detailing the work done slowly over the last two years to get the "project" out of a barn and back on the road. _________________ 1989 Vanagon GL - 2.1 (White - "Northlake" Totaled/Gone)
