Part of that high price has to do with the limited numbers they can sell, compared to Type 1 cranks the numbers are minuscule.

They’re the same basic crank design that’s used in 36 hp engines.

This is why if I ever own a Porsche it will be a 76 912e with the type 4 motor. At least on my current budget and retirement plan....

Part, but not all. The brass distributor drive gear for VWs and 356s is $38.50 at a well-know vintage VW parts supplier and $114.59 from a well-know vintage Porsche parts supplier. Same part.
