I recently purchased his 71 Thing. It came with a swing axle rear suspension and no reduction boxes. This caused the rear end to sit lower and the wheels are set in to far in. I would like to raise the rear suspension up 2 to 3 inches to level up the vehicle and push the tires outward so they are in line with the front tires. What’s the best way to accomplish this?
Do I add back the reduction boxes, install adjustable spring plates, or adjust existing spring plates, or is there a better option out there? Longer axles or spacers?

I would add back the GRB's. It is the original set up for your car anyways.
I have a '72, most 181's are CVJ... we are few and far in between from the first gen.
Here you have a video of when I rebuild mine. I hope you find it useful.

Don`t forget that if you just add reduction boxes to your existing transaxle, You will have four reverse gears and one forward. You need to flip the ring and pinion as well. _________________ If you`re going to do something, do it right. |

Thanks Bryan67, great video. Did you put in a freeway flyer and what size engine did you install. How’s your speed with the GRB’s? One last question, are Thing’s GRB’s the same as buses or do I need to find thing only? |

It is the same original gear ratio that came with it, just replaced the worn parts.
The 181 GRBs part number starts with 181, which means it is 181 exclusive, but it is very simmilar to a 36mm GRB set up from a Bus.
The comment above is correct, if you add GRB's to your current Gearbox you'll end with 4 reverses and one forward... to make it work you have to swap the differential to the other side.
Your best bet is to get a "Small Nut" 36mm bus transimision (Drum to Drum) and mount that.
I hope that helps. _________________ 1972 VW 181 SAFARI 1500 cc GRB Trans-axle |

Search the parts clasifieds for the split window Bus, 50 to 63 Bus, You are looking for a Drum to Drum 36MM (Small Nut) transaxle. If I was on your place I would have it sent to these guys to have it rebuilt for you,
then is just a matter of mounting it.
Those guys can also make the "Freeway Flyer" mod you were asking for
