Image looks like you are shooting off on the RH side, if so that will skew it. Best if you measure from each side of the inner diameter of the TO bearing to the input shaft.

Gotcha. Thanks for the keen eye and advice.

I read this somewhere else in another post -"Where else can you go and get free advice from knowledgeable VW mechanics?"

Priceless!

Just brought it home yesterday. It's not perfect but I'm going to drive it a while before I decide to do anything else. Just wanted to close the book (for now) on this.

Everett - can you move this to the Reader's Rides category?

Added the Vintage Speed shifter. It took a while for it to come in but it's a definite upgrade.

You guys are very kind. It's still got a few things I need to do to it but right now, with this weather, those things can wait.

Removed the passenger side hinge pin and replaced it with a threaded one so that I could add a mirror. Used a air hammer w chisel and the old pin came right out.

I've been driving the car but it was time to get a few things done. While driving it this past year, it didn't want to start when warm - had to keep the accelerator down when starting it. And, it was skipping/hesitating when driving it - not to the point where you couldn't drive it but it took some skill to minimize it. I had taken it to a local VW place and he said "Let's try a different carb." While they improved it minimally, it was still hard to start when warm. Anyhow, I drove it for the rest of the year in 2021. He also "tried" a different distributor. Mind you, I bought a matched set from a reputable person here on the Samba. So late February, I took my car to Monkeynut VW in Charlotte and wanted them to reinstall the matched carb/distributor and I also purchased a German fuel pump Sparxwerks. Had all of these installed/reinstalled as well as a few other things - realigned muffler connection, heater box repair, spring tune up and few other odds and ends.

And now it is a real pleasure to drive. No hesitation, starts right up - even when warm. Still have a few more things to do, mostly cosmetic but I'll be out and about this spring, summer and fall enjoying it.

The horn quit on two different occasions. First time it was the ground on the steering column became detached. The second time it was the other ground. Now both fixed and back in action. Beep beep!
