I like the "Why? Because we can." aspect of this build.

"The 924 was originally intended to be Volkswagen's flagship coupé sports car and was dubbed "Project 425" during its development. In production terms, the 924 was the first Porsche model powered by a water-cooled, front-mounted engine; it not only helped to take Porsche out of financial ruin, but created the revenue stream needed to continue building and developing the 911." -wiki
For those who, like myself, didn't know the history... |

OK, I was very skeptic when I saw that "LEGO-lookalike monster" first... I had to try it out to believe what it really does. It allows really quick shifting... In the video below you can see it quite good.
BTW... the engine wiring is completed.
Cheers,
holg

That thing is so awesome! I have major respect for someone to step outside the realm of normalcy and take up a project involving a car that most look down on and turn it into something so many would want. You've done the 924 a major plus, and it just looks so damn cool now! _________________ Your Ex asking to be friends after breaking up is like Kidnappers asking to "keep in touch" after letting you go. |

Having worked on 356, 911, 912, 914, 924, 944, and custom VW Beetles, Bajas, and buggies for 40 years as a mechanic, I really don't think the handling will be too much worse than a Super Beetle. The relationship between the rear torque tube and the bell housing to engine mounting face is pretty much the same as the Bug, therefore, the engine weight and CG is also similar in the chassis. The 924 uses a rear torsion tube with rear suspension as removed from the VW Beetle. The 924 wheelbase is dimensionally the same as the VW beetle. The front VW Rabbit derived front suspension is evolved from the Super Beetles Mcferson strut unit.
In fact, it may even be better than the Super Beetle since the car is lower to the ground (once the front ride height is adjusted for less weight in the front due to the engine transfer, the front coil over springs will likely need to be cutdown). The original 924 engine block is iron and quite large in size for it's displacement since it was taken from the VW transporter - truck engine. Even the Audi transmission weighs more than the VW transaxle. Therefore, the modified 924 will be much lighter. You will likely be very surprised how well this will work. With the fuel tank up front it will be fairly balanced with a high polar moment of inertia which helps in stability if the tank is kept fairly full. Adding wider tires at the rear (an old 911 trick) will also help and can be done by adapting 944 or 924 Carrera rear fender flares. You can even replace the back glass to a lighter Poly (with Ferrari F40 style slots and louvres to let the engine breath) in order to reduce rear weight as well. I would also remove the heavy rear bumper and replace it with a fiberglass unit (and keep the front bumper as is). One more thing is that the shifter rod wiould have to shortened as taken from the Beetle. A Dune Buggy gear shifter housing welded in and a VW Beetle shifter added. I think one day, I will try this with a T4 engine using upright cooling! Especially when you look at the cost of anything Porsche rear engined and aircooled these days! |

Yes, I always thought the SP2 was ahead of both the 924 and 928 yet similar. |
