Upon removing the firewall tar board in the engine bay, looking for bad areas that need attention, we found cloth bags that look like bean bags, but no beans in them. Stuffed up in hollow areas above the engine compartment on either side. What are they for?
I swear as you take these babies apart, it's like an archaeological dig, trying to figure out what was done and what was original. Are these bags beneficial to the rebuild, or are they not needed? |

They are for sound insulation. They also block a potential pathway for dust and engine fumes. _________________ "Criticism comes easier than Craftsmanship"

So should I reuse them? |

Sure, as long as they are intact. Otherwise, make new ones as other people on The Samba have done. In my experience the bags also help keep the old style cloth headliners cleaner in the back. _________________ "Criticism comes easier than Craftsmanship"

Hi,
We typically refer to them as the "pillows," I ran a search herein and you can read a bit more on them: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/search.php?searc...=titleonly
You can do the same search in the 58-67 forum and find more discussion. _________________ My name's Steve and it's pronounced "Bust 'em" (cuz people think I'm Tom) 😏 |
