May not be a big deal for some, but it was for me and Gretchen. Longest drive since purchase. 14 miles Woooooh...
Gretchen participated in a car show with no expectations of wining. The reward was the first successful drive with no issues since legal to drive to and getting back home.
Many were impressed with her story and what had been done. This drive truly was my real milestone for her. There was one other notch, a slant and four squares.

Congrats!!! the first real drive anywhere without mechanical issues is a hug milestone. now its just time to address little projects here and there while maintaining drivability. again Congrats bro! _________________ Schnell, SCHNELL!

Had not posted about my efforts on Gretchen, so thought I would share. As I have said before, I am not looking for concourse. I want my car to look close to original and in a well maintained look. This is what I have done to the interior panels and arm rests.
They were all pretty grimy and dirty. These two sets show the before and after of the panel after cleaning.
The large front panels had multiple issues. There were tears and voids, along with vinyl puckering and shrinkage. In addition, the driver panel was cracked/warped in the middle. I had to do driver side replacement repair on both the upper corner of the board and vinyl. The vinyl had shrunk and a corner was missing I had to steal a bit of vinyl by one of the interior pockets to replace the missing piece. Then slowly stretch the vinyl and glue it back into position.
Not shown are the back panels. These had to be reinforced in multiple areas. I used thin matte board laminated onto the original fiber board.
All of the armrests were missing small to large portions of the pebbled vinyl as well as foam bits. I cleaned and replaced the missing foam area. I used a combination of hard expanding foam and poly-vinyl acetate. I made divots and small brads inserted as new foam anchors. I thought I had all of the voids even, but when I applied the replacement vinyl to the biggest void, I could see the small depression. It is not perfect, I admit, But, the adhesive and my cuts seem to be holding and I have used heat and cold to verify adhesion
Next Step, installation. But before I do that I will be addressing the inner rust of the door panel. restoration of the window regulators and hinges. _________________ Ossipon

It's funny that you suggest that. Because moments me after posting it, I was thinking about doing something I heard called "doing a Steve" when I first joined the forum.
Thank you for the link. I am planning to do exactly that. remove all the old vinyl along with my V1 repair and start over again. I have confidence I can do it better with an entire surface redo. _________________ Ossipon

You've done a lot, but I think you can do more to these panels. Not sure what you used, but I went over mine with a paint brush and some acetone. You can really work the acetone in and out of the grain on the panel. Some panels are different, not sure of the year break down. Yours are the grain, others have the "pores." The acetone method works on both.
If you do go the acetone route, work it with the paint brush, then wipe with a wet rag soaked in water. You'll see the dirt lift out of grain. It's very important that you do not let the acetone sit on the panels for too long, and that you do not scrub too hard with a rag or whatever. You will damage the vinyl as it becomes soft and pliable.

Thanks for this. I had avoided acetone as a cleaning solvent for the reasons you give. I had used acetone years ago on vinyl and it became "sticky" vinyl.
My cleaning solution was a personal "witches brew" of a mix of Propyl alcohol, diluted saddle soap, de-ionized water, with a bit of dawn. I had found my recipe generally safe for old vinyl, which was my primary concern
I would apply to a section with an old ultrasonic toothbrush. Scrub with the toothbrush. Then wash and rinse the surface with cotton rags. As seen the method and solution was moderately successful.
I may try a diluted acetone/isopropyl mix to see if does a deeper clean. I just am hesitant to use straight acetone as previously stated.
Right now, I have stripped the old vinyl off all the arm rests and smoothing the depressions before applying full pebbled vinyl I have sourced. _________________ Ossipon

Realized I never posted what I redid on the armrest vinyl. This is much better. I fully admit it is not perfect on the ends. But, as suggested, I found material that matched. I removed the old vinyl down to the foam. Look above and this is the version 2.

So I had not really made an effort to restore the back armrests. So, decided this was the weekend. Actually, just an afternoon effort.
The replacement vinyl worked great as seen below. I stripped both to the foam before starting this time.
Now to put the back panels in. Before I do that, I will glue the edges down. _________________ Ossipon

I agree 100% with Jason, it does look much better than version 1. If the rears look as good, you'll be on to something. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Not so much cheap as the pain to the added costs of shipping. I am getting ready to replace the rear parcel shelf cover with a cut matboard from a frame shop. There was a bad rear windshield seal rotting the parcel cover surface. The off-white matboar is both thick and with texture. It looks pretty close to the original surface that is not rotted. _________________ Ossipon
