Its been slow going on some of the little projects for sure. I have the bumpers assembled and have been sorting new hardware for them that Ill clean and Nickle plate at the end of it. The brackets, now in front of my face, are these thin, delicate things. The bumpers on the Ghia are pure jewelry for sure. Not much in the way of "bumping" for a bumper. So Im tweaking them as needed to be straight then painting them black. The pair is almost finished.
Also I was good this year so Santa dropped some bling off that may make its way onto the project.

Getting the seats ready to be sand blasted and painted -
I was working the side yard today and moved my chairs around. I noticed how heavy they were and though shit they are sopping wet with water. So I brought them into the garage and pulled off the old covers and padding. Nope - they were dry, I forgot how heavy these suckers are! Best built seats for a VW for sure. I forgot how nice they are. I had a 66 34 pan back in the day and was going to put a notch body on it that I had - just to run the seats.
Back in a time when this stuff was just low hanging fruit nobody wanted.

Are you going to try to use the material already there or is everything going to be all new after you refinish the metal? _________________ 2017 Golf Alltrack

Im going to have the springs and seat base's basted clean. Paint the springs black and the frames Anthricite. Then recover with all new material and innards. All done to the 9's since I have the right stuff faithfully sourced, invested in and finally hand made by Pedro

If you're going "all the way" skip the paint and go for powder coated frames and bases. _________________ '68 Lotus White T34 automatic sunroof

I don't know if I'd powder coat the springs, frames yes. The springs might be more of an epoxy spray type of thing to do, depending on how heavy the rust is on them. Maybe a light sand blast to give a coating, but be careful not to take the spring out of the springs. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Got the seats and rims back from blasting. Im going t go through all my rattle cans and use all the Black and Light Gray I have and finish off all the straggler cans I have. Paint the springs black and the frames gray - then get some WW Anthracite to final paint the frames.
I bought some WURTH silver wheel paint for the rims. These are all date coded matching 3/62 Porsche Lemmertz 356 rims.

First coat down with regular cheap paint to prime/seal and help the good paint look/ last longer.
If rattle cannin your rims on the side of the house next to the trash cans don't get me my "Shade Tree Mechanic" merit badge then I don't know what will.

More of the mundane. Shot one of the rims in the new silver. Turned out nice. Now three more.
Also - did you know the Hazet tool box goes in the back of the Type 3 rim?

Getting the seats repainted and put back together.
The valve stems came in. Now that all four rims are painted, I popped them in with the go fast wire dealies.

Big move forward. The Ghia is having a final strip down so that a clean shell is ready to be modified.
Pulled from the Tomb in Ramona, she will be heading down shortly to the Type 3/34 Factory for all convertible modifications.
Battery pan area is the worse followed by the heater inlets under the seat. I'm sure sitting in Wet Oregon and being marinated in mouse urine hasn't done it any favors. Spare nose section will be used to clear out some front collision damage repairs.

Friday after work, went to the hidey hole where the Ghia has been kept in Ramona and pulled some last minute stuff off. Because Saturday, I rented a U-Haul and moved the stripped car and nose section to the Type 3/34 Factory down in Imperial Beach. Ron Smith - 15OO Club OG, drove up from Lakeside on his birthday to help me load this stuff. Thanks again brother, happy birthday again - I owe you a solid.
With Pedro's 62 Convertible T34 Prototype nearing completion of its body stiffening and top placement, there is now time/space to drop mine in the Que.
Alterations in store for mine are as follows. Remove the rear package tray, remove/replace dash with a 64, replace damaged nose section with way nicer one, stiffen and fabricate all back seat area to be a convertible, modify T14 convertible frame for T34 body, fix pan and stiffen.
In the end, this car will be a 1964 S Convertible version if they would of made it. I am taking several liberties during the build with performance and reliability that will be hard or impossible to detect - especially to 90% of the VW hobbyists out there. Eric Hand has been pressing out the support steel pieces we need for the pan - thank you brother for the time and effort you put in!
This wouldn't be happening if Pedro Sainz hadn't shook out all the details before hand. So much of our hobby is the guy that sits down and takes the time to make a thing. Pedro has gone down a serious rabbit hole in the making of his thus far, the quality of his build shows. That initiative and desire is well tempered by Jack Fisher. Without Jacks shop, his skills and knowledge as a Type 3 enthusiast, most of all this would never be realized. A huge thanks is owed to him at the end of all this.
So yeah this is kinda a big deal. I've wanted a notch or T34 vert for as long as I can remember. There have been several starts along the way - 25 years in the making, but this is the real deal, going to happen.
I cant wait to get in it with the boys down at the Factory.

That looks to be in the end an outstanding project.
Something had been in the back of my mind for some time and your pics finally brought it to the front.
There is an amazing similarity of a 61 Corvair convertible rear and your T34 rear. The biggest, obvious difference is the dual taillight config of the corvair. But, there are other things in the body styling that are quite similar. My brother had the 61 900 monza convertible in the late 60s and your one picture brought it all back. _________________ Ossipon

One of the reasons I sold my German Corvair. Especially since I live an hour northeast of Detroit.
I knew a woman who had several Corvairs, including a soft top, but preferred her 73 Super convertible. I put floors in it for her, along with doing the brakes. She loved that car. Mainly because she could easily get parts for it. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Work has begun on the second Type 34 Ghia Convertible at the Type 3/34 Factory. Jack has since removed the dash an put on the 64 as well as welded up some holes in the rear trunk and removed the rear window parcel tray.
