I am much less familiar with split bugs vs oval bugs, but based on what I know about bonnets/hoods, I would say (If it has the 6 bolt holes plus the hood latch hole = 7 holes in total)
Your bonnet would be a 1950ish-52ish

The 2 large holes in the badge triangle plate refers to period 1953-55. |

Oh.. I had forgotten to look at the triangle support plate
I have hoods from most of the early years... 1949-50, 52ish-early 55, mid 55, oval era hoods, and the early 4tab hoods for large rear glass bugs (58-60). Dont have the 51-52ish hood (which this hood is an example of)
Split hoods had a 3 prong vw emblem on top. The 3 small circles on that triangle plate shows where the prongs would be inserted
.
The 52ish - early 55, that had the triangle plate, only had the 2 lower circles and there were 2 other slits cut on hood to allow for the 4 tab hood emblem |

Reading through old emblem topics, it seems the change from 3 tab solid emblems to 4 tab emblem was somewhere between November 52 and Jan 53, so midway through Zwitter production. If this is a 3 tab hood it would be up to that change _________________ modok wrote:

A three tab hood would have three small holes on the triangle plate. This is clearly for a four tab emblem if it were going on a deluxe. _________________ Chris

But I see no holes at all on the hood.... for a 3 tab or 4 tab. I'm guessing the hood was for a standard split bug.
My 52ish-early 55 hood's triangle plate is different from the triangle plate on the 1950 hood...... It's similar to the one pictured here, with exception that it has the 3 openings for the 3 tab emblem |
