I have a low mile complete, original 1976 914 with the 2.0 engine. It is badly rusted in the expected structurally important areas because it sat outside.

In some future life I was imagining I would get around to welding it up, having researched the availability of the aftermarket parts, etc.

Now a fairly inexpensive southern rust free 1971 914 presents itself. It is missing the engine, trans, door glass, interior and odd bits, having been autocrossed

Will my 1976 parts swap onto the 1971 rolling shell?

I have read that the shifting mechanism was revised as well as the window mechanism.

If anyone happens to have any insights I'd be grateful before I drag home another boat anchor!

Thank you.

The 2.0 pancake motor externally is pretty much the same as the earlier 1.7 so I don't see a problem with the engine. I would assume the manual trans was basically the same since I don't remember any changes other than gear ratios. I'm not an expert on the 914 but if it was me, I'd go for it. BTW, a 914 was no boat anchor.

Your car is a pre 73 trany, in 72 at the end of the 914/6 production porsche decided redesign the linkage,as the pre 73 was difficult to adjust and keep that adjustment k within factory spec., leading a very mediocre gear change at best.
The 73 onwards was a great gearbox/linkage very smooth and precise.
What you will need to find is a complete 914 73 onwards gearbox linkage. It could be a bolt out ,bolt in the new or you might have to find and fit some a 73 onwards chassis steel work, so cut and weld. But well worth it either way.

You need everything in the 73 onwards pic bar the gear knob, by the looks of things some minor chassis work is needed or there might exist a kit out there. I would put higher compression euro 2056 pistons and cylinders while the engine is out, it makes all the difference especially with the earlier exhaust muffler.

Excellent information.

As the 1976 is the complete donor car, I will have everything I need.

The 2.0 will need pistons and jugs as these smoke, having been frozen from sitting. So the specs for the euro upgrade are much appreciated. I will give it a complete teardown but am optimistic as there was no knocking from rods or mains, and it idled well. Also, the transaxle shifted smartly through all 5 gears and reverse during the brief exploratory drive once I got it started up.

Ok. With this information I will explore the aquisition of the rust free 1971 autocrosser shell.

Thank you.

Yeah those 914 engines tend to be quite solid as regards to the bottom end. But they can appreciate a top end rebuild ever so often, piston/cylinders possibly a valve job, at least a check up. If you are running the original injection you can squeeze a few more ponies out of her, those Euro pistons will increase compression, and by uping the fuel pressure a bit , fitting a variable resistor on the cylinder head temperature sensor adjusting it on a rolling whilst adding a tad of advance, especially if you change the original air filter set up. I did this lost a bit of weight and on windy country roads I was right up the back of a 993 at a porsche meet in france.

If it is a low mileage engine I would think twice about doing the bottom end , maybe just pull the 2 crankshaft seals ,inspect her while the pistons are out and get some engine oil on all the bearings, cam etc. at the same time if she has sat a long time.. Those type IV engines are rock solid especially just pushing a light 914 around. I did one some whilenago just the top end. I prefer to leave the bottom end unless really nessacery ,Vw\Porsche do such a good job

Well, I traveled some distance to see it but the 71 autocross car was too butchered up to return to street duty. So I will plan to repair the rust on the 1976 complete car.

I did leave the seller with a low offer to buy the shell to cut up further for the pieces I need for the 1976. We will see.

Thank you again for the insights.

Try and find a early 73 2.0l without an engine and trany. A lot of those were a 2.0L 914S , to fill the 914/6 gap. They had suspension upgrades, 911 leather steering wheel, and a hot resistor option on the cylinder head temperature sensor combined with a hot MPS, they give a bit me extra umff, plus a center consul and fuchs alloys as standard.

Review 74 914 Restoration (down about 4 posts) and you can see what it takes to restore a rusted 914.

You are correct and I've been following his thread from the beginning. I have also re-read it a couple of times. I think the most impressive part of his approach is to build a jig to hold the chassis during the repair.

The seller of the autocross shell got more money than I was willing to spend so I will be fabricating unless something else comes along.

Thank you.

You might want to go look at all the sheet metal available at :
Restoration Design
914rubber.com
Automobile Atlanta (George Hussey)

Between those three, everything you need is available.

Stoddard now sells a rolling dolly for 911 and 356
With minor work you could make the rear work with a 914 chassis.
The front has the same mounting points.

Thank you for the list of vendors RT. I had been browsing Automobile Atlanta and now have some others to browse.

it will fit just fine, all you really need besides the complete power plant and shift linkage is the firewall conversion. Anyone can call me for precise 914 tech advice 10-6 m-f and 10-4 on saturdays

If you have any question, happy to help ! It's not my job, metalwork is only my passion but if you need some informations, just ask ! Those 914s really rusts but they are so fun on the road!
