Found this oil leak. It’s the same on both sides. Possible valve cover leak or heads? Hoping I don’t have to remove the engine to replace them.

Time for a good degreasing, then watch for where the leak originates, could be the head joints, or it could be blowing down from somewhere else, too gooey in there now to speculate. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

It's really hard to stop all oil leaks on one of these, if you aren't getting but a drip or two every time you use your rig, it could be best just to ignore it than open a can of worms. You don't want drips ending up on and entering the heater boxes though. |

next time the engine is out and the tin off, I would suggest re-torqueing the head bolts.
As Mike said, it is hard, almost impossible on any 1970's engine to stop all the oil leaks after they get 50,000 miles on them, VW especially. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

Thanks for the replies! I'm going to clean it up some and keep an eye on it to see how much its actually leaking. Hopefully its just a few drips here and there. I really want to drive this thing around a little before I start the body work! Rear brakes are done, just need to replace ebrake cable, front brakes and hoses and fuel lines. At that point I think I'll feel good enough to drive it around a little! |
