Has anyone come up with a hack to fix the plastic brackets that break off of the window regulator. I don't want to spend >$100 on a new regulator when the one I have is perfectly good minus the little plastic pieces. The window still goes up and down, it just occasionally falls off the track when it is fully lowered.
(note: I pulled the window away from the track to show the metal portion of the regulator where the plastic brackets would go. Hence the regulator cable came out of the track too.)

Hi,
I did a fix on my regulator a couple of days ago, I salvaged plastic guides from some spare parts I had.
http://shufti.wordpress.com/2011/01/27/vanagon-window-regulator-repair/
In the past, on another van, I was missing one of the guides and I managed to wrap some wire between metal bracket and the window holder. Worked ok, but not great.
If I had to, I would use some poly (plastic cutting board, and cut out a new one. It would be easy enough to make saw cuts for the slits.

ps your cable, in the pic, does not look right, I think it should be in a channel on that vertical track, see the above url for pics of what it should look like. _________________ '86 7 passenger syncro, converted to westy pop top, project still in progress

I used your post to take my regulator out when my window would not go up. But now I see that the "tabs" are busted. Can I order those individually? And how are they supposed to attach to the cable? Do they wrap around it? |

I don't know if the tabs ( and I mean the tabs connected to the cable) are available. They push on to a metal part which is held to the cable by bendable tabs.
I think I showed this in my blog post
http://shufti.wordpress.com/2011/01/27/vanagon-window-regulator-repair/
I theorized that you could make. New tab from some polyethylene sheet. Might take a bit of fabrication, but not impossible.

I decided to try this out. my first attempt I duplicated the old plastic bushing. It was a tadd too thin so I decided to try making a heavier duty thick window bushing and was very pleased with the results. Will post pics later of the process

Please DO post the entire procedure, if you can take the time and trouble, with pictures. I've never been sure of what do about just this problem with Winston's passenger side window.
Thank you!

Try Ken at " Vanagain " in New Jersey , I know he has made some repair parts for these.
But honestly this regulator is 25 years old and has served you well, A new part
would do your van well, kinda like an orange in your stocking at Christmas.

My regulator still worked fine. I was hesitant to use an aftermarket one along with the expense versus a few bucks for cutting board. I reasoned that a heavier duty part would last a bit longer. Once the old regulator is cleaned and relubed it worked very smoothly. While regulator was out I replaced the rubber weatherstripping and wing window rubber as well. Windows seal tight . I did make the mistake of using the wrong grease. without thinking I just used a dab of my cv joint grease left over from my PST bushing install. Great grease but it smells like..er grease. |

Apologies for reviving this ancient thread, but I just ran into the same problem with my Syncro.
Weirdly though, I had already bought a nylon cutting board, originally meant to make some drawer sliders with it, but that plan changed. So I did come up with the plan to fabricate the plastic bushing from the cutting board and then voila, here I found someone with the same idea and a photo-guide of the process. Awesome. |

I've installed a couple of these, and they work perfectly. My cutting board parts I fabricated "worked" but certainly not as well.
And I would not ever recommend aftermarket (manual) regulators. Unless there's a new player out there, the available replacements are garbage. _________________ '86 Westy FAS GenV Turbo (Marvin) |

Awesome, that might work if I can find someone out here in rural South Africa with a 3d printer
The Gowesty ones look great, but again, kind of hard to get my hands on it here in SA. |

This is just a rubber grommet from Ace. Worked for years.

Cool, thanks for that. I did find a 3d printing place, but I might just go on a trip to the hardware store first |

Quick update: I went out and found a fitting rubber grommet. Was a bit of a struggle to fit it on, but it seems to be working. Now let's see how long it holds |
