What does that mean? I don't understand this text
You could try taking them to small claims court. |
Many engine builders put a dime sized disc on the engine case. if you overheat the engine the center melts and indicates the engine was overheated. They use that to deny warranty claims.
"Center Melts At 195-200F"

Is it really 200F max?
Depending on where it is, that would immediately melt on any of my engines according to my laser thermometer. |
I'm sure there are ones with different heat ranges. But maybe GEX purposely uses ones with a low melting point to deny claims. _________________ Glenn

Oh great. A friend of mine saw my engine and pointed out that oh no, I have a GEX engine. He basically said I'm screwed! 😆 Sounds like I probably am! My brother who had the bus before me had the engine installed after he broke down sometime between 1991-1994 I'm guessing. He was very young and wouldn't have known better. I just texted him asking how long he drove it with that engine. Still waiting for his reply (she checks her phone for the third time).
Meanwhile I had several things done more recently using stock parts to help my bus get back on the road regardless, including major tune-up, new master cylinder, I think new distributor, rebuilt carburetor, new heater boxes, breaks, clutch, major cleaning and re-greasing, a few other things I'm forgetting, and had the friggin tranny beautifully rebuilt.
I don't think the bus was driven long after the engine replacement cause then the tranny had issues so my brother gave up and parked it for basically 20 or so years before I had that work done. It hasn't been driven more than probably 60-80 miles by me since then.
Questions:
1. I don't suppose there's any chance they were a better company back in the early to mid nineties, is there? 😆
2. If it does fall apart apart, which I completely expect now, approximately how expensive is it to have an experienced, reasonably priced, self-employed person put together a better quality one including of course the engine/parts? What about vs a a VW shop? I'm guessing those are two pretty different prices. I'm in Portland, Oregon, fyi. Just want to get an idea of how much trouble I'll eventually be in financially, since I'm about to invest in body work then in getting the whole interior put back in (new flooring, insulation and panels then all the original camper furniture). That will all cost a lot (for me) and I never intend on selling (my grandpa bought it new). And it's been a looooong time coming, haha - only 27 or so years since it was last a drivable camper!! I'm going to be so screwed and profoundly disheartened if the engine then decides to effing die on me!!
Ahem. Thank you! |

I guess my brother drove his (now my) GEX engine around for a few years without issues (before it was left to sit 20+ years until I had it tuned up and drove it around for a while a few years ago). He took it to Los Angeles and back to Portland Oregon at least three times as well as a couple of other places and it was his daily driver. Hopefully - knock on wood - this is a good sign that I got one of the non-lemons. Knocking on wood again! 😆 _________________ 1970, Riviera, 1600 cc type I [single port] |

Don't let it scare you. Even GEX sold a couple of decent engines. Remember you're only going to hear the bad. You may have found one of the survivors! _________________ John

As we used to say “ Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in awhile”
and so it is with GEX. |

there a several similar that seem to keep surviving as well...
they must have other stuff going on as well as I have a hard time believing they make enough off basic engines alone.. |
