I have a 1641 running an AP-2 cam and a 44 weber single carb. Have always run a header on this engine but I am swapping cars and I want to try to keep the original look. I have a perfect stock muffler and would like to try that. I don't really think I am running enough power that the stock muffler is going to hurt me. What are your thoughts?
And before you suggest it I don't want to spend the big bucks on a look alike muffler. I will stay with the header before doing that.

Stock heater boxes? Then the stock muffler is fine.

Stock heater boxes. Fairly new ones at that. Another reason I want to stay generally where I am at. That header I have on there is close to 40 years old! They certainly don't make them like that anymore!!!!

One of the “tricks” bitd was to remove the “baffles” from the OEM chrome tips.

That's one of the tricks that I did when I was running a 1776 back in my college days. However, I also learned that the engine, or vibration would spit out the chrome tips over time. When you remove the guts, the tips loose their strength and will crush a little bit and the clamps would no longer hold them to the muffler. What I did was to weld just a tack from half of the clamp to the tip, and I quit spitting them out.

They sell chrome tips without the baffling. Or they used too.

With that engine you're giving up 3-5 HP and 1-2 MPG running a stock muffler.
