Nice work there. the 'dangerous' bit is cutting into the corner and not going one thread too far.
is it possible the original had some 'interfacing' around the hole on the inside to give it a bit more structure? sort of like your masking tape but cloth.
As well, my partner who is a serious sewer, suggests you might need stitching to stabilise the corner before you snip it
http://sewaholic.net/crescent-sew-along-10-how-to-reinforce-centre-front/ the last couple of pictures make sense of the process.
great work so far Smile

That sounds like a good method. Maybe I can then pull that stitch up around the opening to not see it.

Here is a look at one of the front corners. My wife is suggesting to sew on the front and rear “fold in” area that glues to the front and rear frame. Then the V cut would not let as much framing show. Since we have to add the beading a separate piece makes sense too and would provide a nice edge to square/pull on.

The front of the opening, in the only other Webasto I have seen and in the Golde manual, they use a small chord and make bead like piping. When the sunroof closes there is a slight gap and I think this just covers/blends it.

The Golde actually had a channel to pinch and hold the bead.

I kept one good A and C pillar piece. The use is glue was very light to allow me to get these off.

The A pillar was not sewn to the headliner. It was just put on first then the edge of the headliner folded over and overlapped the top of the A pillar piece.

At the C pillar it was sewn on.

I’ll have to look at the rear tray to see how the blue fabric interfaces with this C pillar fabric. The C pillar must have been covered at the bottom by the package shelf vinyl.

I need to find a good mohair substitute. Anyone have a recommendation. I have asked for grey samples from TMI. Sewfine worked with vinyls.

Shouldn’t you use the same material as the headliner? Being a 56 it should be stretch wool.

Yes I will use the same material. I was just trying to explain what is sewn on and what is overlapped.

Sorry if showing the old parts was confusing. And the latest version of the headliner is just a second prototype. I have not found the right material yet to use. I found one from TMI but it seemed it was a silver grey. Maybe I will end up using it. You can see it above the glove box lid with all of the other fabric colors.

In continuing with the engine insulation I started with Kraft paper, made an initial template, and then the final. Since I had more of the rubber floor left over I will try it for now since it has ribs. I like the look. I have to get the adhesive right so it stays on the board.

I used some air shears to cut board. Worked ok.

I thought the headliner color was the same on all Lowlights.

I still have some material from my restoration some 15 years ago and it looks like this.

It looks like beige/grey wool. Should still be available...

I used this for engine insulation.

But the rubber mat looks like a great alternative. If possible, I would try to change the color...?!

I looked and looked after seeing your photos. Some of mine looked grey but who knows after all these years in the engine compartment. Here is a sample. They were tar boards like the floor mat insulation. I like your look. For now I can cover in black until we can find another fabric. He did such a nice job on the inner fenders I’ll leave them uncovered for now in the engine bay.

Certainly my headliner is grey from what was under the mirror. Trying to find your style material in grey. there is no beige in the interior palette on the Trout Blue. I just looked at your sunroof interior really came out nice.

Thanks for the tip on where to get some headliner fabric.

I like digital images so I am having Dan make a 3D rendering of the 56 Ghia with a Sunroof and Hood scoop like he did for the 58 Alken. He just started and had not done a lowlight before.

Test fitting some lights. Headlight rubber seal seems too thick. Here the screws holding on the rear light reflectors are a specific 141 part, really…. Wish someone made a full set of screws for all of the trim.

A little closer

And I did order a wool type fabric to try for the headliner.

It’s been 30 years but I think WCM. I’ll look to KGPR thanks.

Well my wife Karen helped sew the headliner. I actually got some fabric from WCC which seems the best The initial fit looks good. We sewed the cut corners like suggested above. We needed some cording where it closes to the header and she did a fantastic job.

In the install does the headliner wrap the crimp strip that holds the rubber in? That would make that lip thick for the rubber to lock on but the best way to hold the fabric.

Early 56 Ghia backing plates for the door pulls on the top vs 57 Ghia on the bottom. Basically heavy flat straps replaced by pressed
formed light weight sheet metal.

Not sure when these changed but some fun minutia.
