The Ghia hadn't been out for nearly a month due to a holiday in Portugal followed by Covid and a few rainy days. Just a short drive to blow out the cobwebs.

As winter driving puts a premium on clear dry days you make the most of it when they arrive.
It took a few spins to start the engine and when warmed and the choke off I had to stop to adjust the tick-over. That done the Shorrock runs so smoothly and pulls in top from 25mph, you wonder why these superchargers never sold well for aircooled VWs.
Today I took "Betty's Baby" around some of the older parts of Southampton. This row with Bow windows in Queen's Terrace dates from the 1840s.
At the end of Queen's Terrace stands South Western Hotel, (renamed South Western House in later years), built in 1865 and served the prestigious liner trade which boomed during the 1920s and 1930s.

Great pics as always! I just got back from a week working in London and as I wandered around I was looking at places that would make great backdrops for Ghia pics. Of course not half as cool as out in the countryside, but your backgrounds made me notice things a little more! Thanks John

Thanks Jeff.
Yes I constantly look for backdrops for pictures and work out if I can get the Ghia into a safe position. Often the best backdrops are on a narrow street near a blind corner. I add to the problem because I try to exclude modern vehicles or something that will date the picture. This one is in a usually busy location but I struck lucky yesterday, just one modern car on this side of the road. The oldest pub in town, "The Red Lion".

Such a great looking car. I'd love to see raw photos without a filter. |

It's a strange subject with digital photography especially if you spent many years taking pictures with a film camera.
In the old days you'd probably have two cameras, (I did) one loaded with colour film and another with black & white. I only used one filter when shooting in colour, a polarizing filter but with black & white film I'd have a stack of them...yellow, green, orange, red etc.
Today I don't use any on camera filters...I don't need to. If you shoot in digital .raw format you can make an infinite number of adjustments to get the desired effect. I try to reproduce what my eye sees, not what the camera sees and believe me, it is different.
I shoot to resolve the highlights and draw the shadow detail out in the digital edit. Shooting on a bright day will give you a high contrast image where either the highlights are burnt out or the shadow detail lost. As I say I expose for the highlights and lighten the shadows in the digital edit...that's all I do to my pictures. _________________ John.

Your photoshop skills are at such a level I’m not sure you don’t really live in Rhode Island. Or if you even own a ghia! _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

Ha, my compliment sounded more like a criticism didn’t it?
Always love to see that Ghia in its adopted home, John! _________________ 1973 Porsche 914 2.0

I have enjoyed the last few posts with photography technique discussions
My first career was in photography - I switched careers just when digital was taking over.
Now...still taking photos for fun and art and I'm all about analog Of course, my work flow is part digital but I like the old cameras better.
Current set-up aka kit:
Black Leica II for B&W (Tri-X)
Chrome Leica IIIa for Color film
I think this one is Portra 400...
with the Canon 50mm f1.5 lens on the Leica IIIa
