Wow!! I had totally forgotten about this car.
I just got caught up in the Vanagon, the green guy, the engine building, etc...etc...and lost track of this guy.

Where do you find the time!! Wink
You must be independently wealthy, my good fellow!

From here, it looks like Buggee's kids (minions) are 100% responsible for the yellow bug. Dad was building an engine, so maybe the kids are getting into the action. If the little ones embrace the mechanical stuff (legos, basically) but hate the body work (cleaning toilets, basically), then I totally understand.

So this happened.

It was last year. The minions aged-out of any interest in fiddling with antique cars with their antique dad. Months passed with no activity.

One of the local crew had a minion in auto-body school. A practical, logical, decision was made. At least I would still see it about town one day when they were done with their own adventure with this bug. The Colorado Springs Super was adopted out to them and this is a picture I took to put a cap on our adventure with this bug. I never did post it though.

Within 15 minutes of this picture, I was filled with regret. It was an emotional response. Completely illogical, yet completely human. My son's welds are in that car, and to anyone else they are just welds.

What's done is done.

Or is it?

I have learned that the story of this bug may continue. My maker will decide that. So I have decided to post the picture.

Stay tuned.

My maker was willing! The money has changed hands and I will be back with the trailer once the title is ready and she is packed up again with all her parts. Very Happy

Seems I'm not the only one having minions with a passing fancy for the old man's hobby. Wink

This new beginning should start off properly shouldn't it? Here is the "as found" picture (again Laughing - at least this time I didn't have to drive half a day into the hills of Pennsylvania for her!) I dont know what I'll do with her once she's home again, but I'll think of something. She's in there beneath the rattle can filler primer.

Home again safe and sound! Tucked away like a present under the Christmas tree waiting to be unwrapped. And like most kids, I already know what's in there! Razz

Here we go again! Cruising season is closing here on the north coast of Ohio and I've been pondering what will be the subject of off-season fun this year. There are a handful of worthy junk VWs tucked away that would be more interesting than this one really. Especially considering that I already have a 72 Super Beetle running around...

But then I stumbled on an old video of my (then) teen son driving a car for the very first time, up and down the driveway. This car. He's now a young man, up and out, leaving this "father / son" project behind. In the meantime, this car has been sold off to a "father / daughter" team, but made its way back after sitting over there for a while.

Anyway, I figure I already collected a bunch of parts for this build years ago, including a gallon of Eastwood's hotrod yellow paint still melting a hole in my basement floor, and its already mostly disassembled... and its got some of my sons welding in it so...

I cleared the shop, kinda, then unpacked it and here is a quick walk around.

Some more cleanup and then a slathering of the magic Xion Labs converter primer to eat and etch its way down to the metal molecules and harden into a ceramic-like coating over the next 48 hours. It's truly amazing stuff.

My jack-supporting area got welded in OK

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

But I goofed up this cut altogether and had a ridiculous gap

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

So I tacked in a backing strip, which is the wrong way to handle this. (In my defense I have access to the backside from the interior so I will be able to seal it all up from both sides.)

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Everything is sprayed with weld-through primer on the back. This is the complex shape for the rear edge, leaving the factory hole so I can spray the inside of the Jack support area with frame rail coating or other stuff before I plug it.

Here is the corner all welded up and under a coat of Duraglass, which I use first over welds because it does not absorb moisture through little pinholes. It looks like crap in the tight areas because I couldn't get the squeegee in there and put it on with my fingers (gloved).

I will say that I was too embarrassed to take a picture of my awful welds on this area. It's been a year and a half since I migged any sheet metal and I am way out of practice. I warped the panel too, but not too badly. Anyway, it feels good to have this area roughed-in. Movin' on.
