I'm new to VW's and was wondering if it's possible to check the end play by using a dial meter on the crankshaft pully ? |

Short answer.
YES!
That is the ideal location to get an accurate end play reading with your dial indicator.
Center the indicator tip on the pulley bolt. The pulley can flex a bit when pushing/pulling the crankshaft forward and aft. _________________ I have learned over the years.

That's actually a quick and easy way to get a good overall idea of the health of your motor's insides- especially if you're new to the car, or vice-versa. _________________ Aloha,

Engine off trans neutral parking brake set grab the crankshaft pulley and push pull. If you can feel any movement chances are you are at or beyond limits. No other tools required. If you have movement combined with clunck clunck sound is real bad. However we’ve seen engines run with ridiculous amounts of end play they live on borrowed time. |
