Ordered parts for my new engine build
And received the parts in the wite and blue packaging ??
Thought the packaging for empi parts was the darker one 🧐
Is this normal?
Or am I getting even cheaper Chinese parts than the Chinese Empi ones 😅

Cargo carpet finished 🤩 happy with the result
Need some minor adjustments in the corner
Now make one more for the front section (won’t be this easy that one)
And maybe under the seat
Complete engine in parts (all left to do now is the correct assembly 😅)
Made me a engine stand like the professionals 😁
Started with all the measurements, and made sure the oil holes line up
with the bearings

Get some casters (wheels) on the engine stand!

Carefully checked all the tolerance and clearance
No issues so far 🤞🏻

What did you do? Can't tell by the photo. How is it when correct from VW? |

Do not have a picture from before i removed it.
the tube was not fully inserted, the screen did not fit properly
Suction tube was not in the center of the hole in the carter, was 1-2 mm off
Was glued in with locktite. Removed it
Cleaned the parts en reinstalled it a bit deeper this time 👍🏻
And seals perfect now 😄 avoiding disaster 🫣

Measured all cylinders for the deck height
0,3mm difference between left (3-4 / 1.06mm) and right (1-2 / 1.36mm) side of the engine |

Being around 1mm(.040”) for deck height looks pretty good. .3mm(.010”) difference from the left to right side is not surprising. You can get some .010” barrel shims to go *under* the one side to even things out. You’ll figure it out, being the super talented builder of this bus! Keep at it. |

3 shims and 0'07 mm cranckshaft end play. Good i guess
i ran into a problem 😅
studs where sticking out to far, closed nut hit the stud.. resulted in nut on the inside of the carter holding the pickup tube came loose 😢
Had to make a special key to tighten it again.
Temp sensor installed 👍🏻
Received the correct shims, measured & test fitted again. All good now
Also used some blue locktite on the head nuts. And also sealant for the lower ones.

You continue to do excellent work. This 1600 should put a big smile on your face, especially once you’re driving down the road. It should be a very noticeable difference over your first engine.
I got mine out for a short drive yesterday, it was the first time in months!
Keep up the great work and posts! |

Unfortunate that you’re having clearance issues with the rockers. Typically there are modifications needed when building a non-stock engine. I would have mainly expected just getting the pushrods to proper length with those rocker arms.
Even building a stock engine can be challenging with today’s available parts. 2 steps forward, one step back. You’ll get there! |

the first plan was to instal the empi ratio rocker set 1.25 : 1
i gave up on this set because the stock valve covers would not fit.. same goes for the stock pushrods. i am already running a w100 camshaft did not feel the need for the extra lift, and even more stress on the components.
So i did go for the empi solid rocker shafts. to get rid of the wavy washers and clips. and space out the rockers as i wish. (did put way to much time in this guess i got a bit picky)
Using some scat lash caps and zero shims underneath the assembly
The geometry is correct at 50% I think 🤔?
Thinking of making more of an edge on the adjusting screws ?? Good idea ? |

In my opinion since you are using lash caps the valves will rotate differently than without lash caps. Those EMPI flatter tappets might help turn the lash caps which in turn will turn the valve stem. My vote is run them as they are and inspect stuff in a few thousand miles. Switch to VW tappets if you want more bevel. |

Ideally I think the adjuster should be radiused, however, that would mean some precise grinding to make them correct. Aircooled.net shows to have some SCAT ball style adjusters that will solve the poor adjustment scenario. I've used these with good success.
Google this -> SCAT Swivel Ball Style Valve Adjusters (Courier Adjusting Screws), Set of 8, 20118
You may still have to resolve proper rocker geometry with a set of these, but these will not damage the valve stems. I think these come with shims, but other shims may be required. |

I got hold of some original Mazda set screws
Did need a 1.2mm shim underneath the assembly
And ideally would need a 1.5 mm one.
Oil hole does line up better, and more space to set the valves.
Negative part is geometry is not correct,
would need defferent set of push rods To do it correctly.
I’m happy with the original screws and lash caps (Zero shims)
Will see after I put some miles on it how everything looks 😄
