Gaylord Perry, 84 and a HOF pitcher who was famous for throwing a spitter although it was actually a Vaseline ball. He won 314 games and pitched 5350 innings and had over 3500 strikeouts. He was as durable as they come. |
I liked this "cheater" in the same way I liked Smokey Yunick... they elevated rule-breaking (or flaunting) to a high art.
Perry used to really taunt the umpires. He made up intricate pre-pitch motions, which umps would study, so Perry made subtle changes sometimes, to fake them out. Much like a magician, his sleight of hand was extraordinary. Umps would be SURE they got him THIS time... and for example, ask him to remove his belt. Written on the inside of the belt was a note "not here!". He was THAT good!
(Dodger pitcher Don Sutton played a similar trick, writing inside his glove, "You're getting warm, but it's not here".)
The only time he was thrown out was bogus since they cold not identify his tool or source, and by MLB rules cannot throw him out without it... but did so anyway. |

Britain's only practicing female Spitfire pilot, 70, was killed in a car crash while on holiday in Australia. Carolyn Grace pioneered the restoration of Second World Spitfires in the 1980s with her late husband, Nick, at their home in Cornwall.
After Nick died in 1988, the mother-of-two learned to fly the restored plane to keep her husband's memory alive.
Over the next three decades, the aviation pioneer clocked over 900 hours in the aircraft, flying it at air shows and memorial events across Europe.
