Where did you purchase the oil temp/dip stick? |

There's also the type that will trigger your idiot light if the oil gets too hot. It replaces the stock dipstick and wires to the existing sensor. |

Zozo, I think it was a little odd that Walmart carried the 12" thermo also, which is why I grabbed it when I saw it because I knew it was perfect for checking the oil. _________________ John

I tried the one Ludsbug posted and it is a high quality item. The problem I had was if you have a breather pipe the gauge won't fix between the hole for the dip stick and the breather pipe. The fix would be the indent the side of the pipe to make room. I returned it and have used a Berg Temp Dip Stick fpr several years. _________________ 67 Sun Roof / Born Sept 66 / Second Owner

I run the Berg temp dipstick. It has worked great for me. Once your idiot light starts to flicker then you know it's time to back off. It it stays on with no flickering, it's time to pull over. Less then a 5-min install and wires to your oil pressure switch. |

Anyone using this,
Does the dipstick gauge your using fit snug in the dipstick tube? Appears to have a rubber collar for the dipstick tube |

One size could fit all type-1s. It just needs to reach far enough to be in the oil. Doesn't matter how far it sticks up (short of interferring with the belt). |
My question sort of sucked - I was thinking about the low/high oil marks, which I think are not the same across all years. _________________ How to Post Photos

it is a little fragile gauge, so it fits loose, you can turn it easily by hand
has a rubber at the top for a seal ,
the only complaint is that it only has one oil level mark, i don´t remember if it is the lower or the full oil level mark
i am very happy with it , it tells you for sure if you are running hot, just open the lid and watch . i have been using it for a year, with no issues
highly recommended |

Harris,
Mine fit loose on the dipstick tube.
I put some heat shrink tubing on the dipstick tube and now the gauge fits tight. |

Some heatshrink tubing has adhesive on the inside. That is the kind I used. |

Glad I saw that Mainely Customs dipstick, that looks pretty cool, I'd rather see a gauge that have the light trigger. But seeing Burg's small sender, having both the Burg small sender somewhere to activate the idiot light, and the gauge dipstick for accurate readings... Kinda the best of both... _________________ -Adam

I tell ya, I wish that Berg warning dipstick would work for me - BUT, well, for me that thing would be going off all the time, so I won't use it. It's impossible to avoid, if I get up to freeway speeds in the summer, it's going to be well over 225. And nothing I've done on either car has made any kind of appreciable difference. |
Does it matter if it comes on DURING accceleration or only while idling after driving a while? 1600DP in bus |

Just for informational purposes, on my '63 Beetle, it is 6 3/4" from the top of the dipstick hole to where it bottoms out down below.
Because of the breather tube, there is so little room for the thermometer dial that I will have to go for a thermometer with closer to a 12" shaft. _________________ “If you care for a thing long enough, it takes on a life of its own, doesn't it?
