I picked up this 66' beetle and starting to tear it apart to make sure everything is good to go. I was told by the PO that it has a 1600cc motor. The serial # suggests it's a 1200. The serial # is D1153955. Am i reading this correctly?

That engine number looks more like its from August 1973 or so (1974 model year).
Non-USA models could be had with the smaller displacement engines.
I'm not an expert on this, but I think they made these "special" 1200s from the same block, so externally it will look like a 1600. And in that case, a previous owner may have fitted 1600 P&Cs.
Please post up some photos, showing the intake manifold where it meets the heads, and the underside to see if it has one oil pressure relief valve or two. |

I have a D engine case in my 72. The case is a dual relief, it is a stock 1600 dual port engine. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

From model year 1970 to the end of German production, 1200 engines shared the same engine block as the bigger engines, switching to cylinders with a larger diameter on their base to make them fit, and having the shorter stroke crankshaft. They can be upgraded if the crankshaft and engine studs are changed to ones that match the new application. _________________ Andy T.

I do not know how to fix this. All I can say is it all works fine for me with what I use, Firefox. |

I take it from your description that you doubt the PO when they say the engine is a 1600cc? I would point out that the "D" on the case indicates it came from the factory in the '70s(?) as a 1200cc engine. That is all. It does not mean it is STILL a 1200cc engine. In the nearly 50yrs since it was built in the factory was it rebuilt into a 1600cc? There is a good possibility it was. Are there any indications your engine may have been rebuilt?
How can you tell? Pull a head and measure the piston diameter and the stroke. Do the calculation and confirm the displacement. Without this, all you can say is it STARTED life as a 1200cc. _________________ AshMan40

As a sidebar, in the early 80's a place called S.I.R. in Orange County, CA was importing pallet after pallet of core engines from Europe.
Some were 1200, some were 1300 and others 1600's.
There may well have been other importers doing the same.
As mentioned the best way to know for certain what's inside is take it apart for inspection and measurement. _________________ -Bruce
