Oval axles

Quick question. Are oval axles (56) different to later short axles ie for a 64?
Found out tonight that one of my axles on my 56 is bent and I have a pair of 64 axles that are ok.
Are they the same?

I've salvaged axles from an early oval to use on a later tunnel type swing axle trans, so I imagine you could swap them later to earlier too. BUT, your car should have a split case transmission, which needs to be completely opened up to remove the axle from the differential. It's not for the faint of heart, and while you're in that far I would look everything in the transmission over. Literally the worst part of rebuilding that transmission is getting it out and opened, so at least you'll have that part behind you..
