I think I remember seeing that at the 2010 Type 3 Invasion. I can't remember who brought it though. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Mr. Bubblehead. He was the builder along with Gary, then known as Icy Weener. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Why is it that this is impressive, but I am not impressed. I guess I would prefer putting 130K towards a 356C or 356 notch or even a 76 912 than this.

What all did Raby do to that motor. That's a big chunk of cost right there. _________________

It’s a full build 2615cc Nikasil pistons, new heads, all options he offers. It was 15k at the time which now he’s closer to 25K for that engine today. Then I changes the EFI to Motech that was 6K Yikes. My next type 34 will not be that expensive. _________________ check my site @ www.letstalkdubs.com

This was an awesome build. I remember it outside of ISP during one of our Open Houses. _________________ 1963 Notchback - Ruby Red

Yeah that's about what I guessed on cost. I have his Camper Special stuff in my 77 Westfalia. _________________

I've never paid much attn to this car - maybe I should have.
Looking at the engine bay, this car was an IRS car. It has no engine hanger at the rear and it does have placement for side hangers. They are not being used.
As a 68 that means it had to have been born an automatic trans

pans look replaced with later ones (seems fine)
Interesting car for sure. |

Ok - it's as I first suspected I believe that car is an entire fraud and I feel bad for the guy. It's got a 368 Vin and that front apron was added to the fastback. Beauty of a car but it's a Frankenstein mess - I'm out
*edit - here's what I wrote BAT:
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1968-volkswagen-type-3-fastback/
The 368 vin says this car or at least the pan was a squareback. The front apron, having a lighter blue paint on the edges, looks to have been removed from another car, and that’s why the tag and rivets look flawless and the numbers match. The first thing I noticed is the body used to be an IRS car but is no longer. Then saw the remainder and realized the vin is from a squareback. You can confirm that by looking at the fastback sold on BAT earlier this year (https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1968-volkswagen-tl-1600-fastback/ ) notice the vin is 318, where 31 means fastback or notchback. The 8 means 1968. So this vin is for a 1968 squareback https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1968-volkswagen-type-3-fastback/
I would like my bids retracted and hold off of my card, please.
Thanks,
Erik G

I am not an expert, but it looked like a Frankenstein when I first looked at it. And while attractive, it has the zits of over-customization to look good. _________________ Ossipon

I think it's a '69 Fastback body on a '68 Squareback pan, with the tag moved over of course. So numbers might "match", but they are incorrect. Back in the day they would impound this car on the spot.
'68 was a split year for IRS, but the early swing axle cars did not have the rear side engine mounts on the body.
It has the '69 right front fender, and it's also sporting a rear window defogger. I don't think the '68 had that available. That was a '69 feature.
Did you see how bad the roof is??? _________________ '64 1500 S

Yeah the roof - dang. He wants a lot of cash for that car. I feel bad for him, he's the guy left holding the bag...
The 68 swing axle cars had the same rear engine hanger as the 62-68 cars. For 68 the auto IRS had the side mounts instead. This is verifiable by looking at any 68 4spd man vs auto. So no, it's not right.
Also I know it's not really a hanger and it doesn't do isht... And that mid trans brace is probably a better answer anyway.
But if I'm bidding I want it to be fair. I may know what I'm bidding on but my competitors should know too. I guess I could have just run it up, bid a lotz then sue when the squareback title comes, but I just want a nice fair deal solid original car. Just shows that you need to know what you're looking at before you buy (bid on) it. A little investigation revels a lot, and with older VW's it pays to pay attention. And it does look like it has a 69 right front fender since there's no finger indent for the fuel door. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I have two customers in mind that popped into ISP, excited about their new purchase. When they asked me to check it out I immediately pointed out that there was no VIN tag on the front apron.
"Is that a big deal?"
"To most, yeah. Does the title match the VIN on the tunnel?"
"Where's that?"
I always try to tell people who want a Type 3 to ask questions BEFORE they go and look at it so at least they know the major stuff to look for. Those two customers were mad at me for pointing out something that was obvious if they had done basic research before purchasing.
Oh well. Glad you were able to get out of that one, Erik. _________________ 1963 Notchback - Ruby Red
