I wonder if anyone knows more about this accessory steering wheel. I just managed to get it fitted to my wife's '74 Thing. Have had the wheel forever, it was in a VW box originally, box long gone. It fits perfectly on the VW Thing. It sort of matches the description of the 'Simulated Wood Grain" steering wheels in the accessory catalogues from ~'71-'74 but the spokes are more tapered and have more holes.
The wheel didn't come with a horn button, I found one on eBay after looking for a long time for something that would fit and look right, this one fit like a glove and looks proper. The centre black part is self-skinning foam.

Looks close. The description says the JC Whitney wheel is mahogany, my wheel is 'simulated wood'. Spokes and especially hub are similar but different number of holes in the spokes. _________________ SL |

It fits a '74 Thing- that means it does not fit anything from the 60s- we can be sure of that. It is also not the one from the VW catalog- that model is bloody plain compared to yours (I've got the boring one in my '71 FV tribute beetle). We can also rule out FIV, Personal, Nardi or several other Italian models since it has no name or made in Italy stamping.
I am also of the belief it came out of JC Whitney's later than '73 catalog. The hub may offer more clues. Take off the horn button and look inside- or at least compare the OC bolt spread to those know hubs made by Grant, GT, etc...
Searching the galleries- here's this one that looks a bit like yours: I just want to see the hub- and of course I'd like to see the wheel below somewhere in a FV catalog to be sure

Another thought- maybe reach out to Restojohnny here. He is an avid steering wheel freak and really knows his stuff. _________________

It is a long shot, but gave a look at Springalex steering wheels. They have a rubber horn button holder thingy that is similar in shape. |

My '71 Super came with an identical wheel to this, although my horn button is blank (so whatever emblem it had probably fell off) _________________ '60 Canadian Standard, '64 Bug, another '64 Bug, '66 Bug, '69 Sunroof Bug, '69 GT3 Bug, '71 Super, '72 Super, '73 Canadian Custom, '74 Love Bug, '83 Mexi Bug, '85 Cabrio, '94 Mexi Bug, '99 New Beetle, '02 New Beetle Turbo S, '03 New Beetle VR6. Cool! Makes some sense you're in Canada since a lot of these VW accessories were market specific. The wheel came in a VW branded box (should have kept it!) but there was no horn button. The button was found on eBay after a lot of looking and measuring to make sure it would fit. _________________ SL |
