A friend of mine got this postcard recently and we noticed, that the exhaust has 4 tail pipes.

The picture was taken in 1956 in the Ruhr area.

Has anyone ever seen such an exhaust before? Any information on it available?

if it is indeed a Lukey quad tip early system, it is very far from home

But I would suggest it's something different.

Thank you to Dion and Henry for the above images.

Given the second set of bumper guards, I would suspect the owner was pretty creative and modified the muffler himself.

I think the people are sitting on the seats from the car aren't they?

I've noticed this is a pretty normal thing in vintage Split/Oval Bug photos.

They go on a picnic and pull the seats to sit on outside.

Well, that's what my assumption was. But, I thought it was worth asking the crowd. Looks like nobody has seen this particular muffler before.

Thak you for the input.

I don't think so either. The spacing of the tailpipes is different.

What’s interesting to me is how they took the seats out to use them as chairs/benches.

In relation to the comments about them sitting on the vehicles seats outside the car.

I came across this early publication regarding the topic

the original beetle was quite practical. my 59 beetle held a lot of cases of beer. fold down the rear backrest and load her up. 10 cases of 20 half liter glass bottles, no problem. drives like a rolls with that weight. sure, the bus holds more, but a beetle can hang with a standard car.

The rails are greased, I would fear mud on them after placing them outside on the soil causing sticky seats when sliding them back in the rails.
