My New Beetle won't stop leaking water when it rains, even though I've cleared all the sunroof drains and had tested it several times with a hose.
So I'm taking the only appropriate action: I'm putting the New Beetle in the garage to air out for a few weeks and bringing Beetlebaum back online so that I can have a car to drive.
What needs to happen:
-drain the fuel and replace the braided fuel lines
-get him running again (likely nothing more than refilling the carb float bowl and then letting him run for a while, but we'll see)
-install the new heat exchangers and muffler
-a general once-over to make sure that nothing else went bad while he sat
Time for Beetlebaum to save the day.

I've been working on important job-related projects for the past week or so, so I haven't been able to dive into Beetlebaum until today. I still have to finish the other stuff, but I figured, what the heck, it's Sunday--may as well do something fun.
So I put Beetlebaum up on jackstands for the first time since December 2018 and started draining the fuel. The fuel is so old that it smelled like varnish. I'd planned on draining it and replacing the rubber lines anyway, but there's no question why the car wouldn't even run poorly on this gasoline.
So, tomorrow I'll run out and get some more rubber fuel line and a new fuel filter so that, when I do finish my other stuff, I'll be prepped to get out to Beetlebaum later this week. _________________ 1973 Super Beetle

Just came across your thread and read through most of it. Cudos for doing so much work on it yourself! _________________ .

Thanks--it's mostly because I enjoy doing the work, and partially because it would cost way too much to have someone else do it!

Ah, that's too bad! It would've been cool to coordinate a meetup. I recently discovered a beautiful '64 down at the oceanfront and sometimes drive past it to see if it's still there.
------
Yesterday I got Beetlebaum to fire up for the first time since the pandemic started! But then he died almost as soon as he turned on, signs of a likely fuel delivery issue. I was talking to a fellow member of TheSamba who recommends checking the gas tank for rust, which seems likely, given how rancid the fuel had become from sitting. (It smelled like varnish.) Thankfully, however, I have a fuel filter installed, so no rust should have gotten into the carb.
Anyway, it's rainy today, so no Beetlebaum adventure for today. Later this week I should have a chance to address the fuel tank condition. _________________ 1973 Super Beetle

If I remember correctly it will be their toy run. I miss having a local shop. Enjoy! _________________ 1973 standard, yellow, lowered, 3” narrowed front, 1600 blo-thru turbo w/single dell 15.4@86, so far

Well, well, well... it's Beetlebaum time again!
After a very tough past few years, late 2022 marked the beginning of me getting my life back on track after several years of a lot of difficulties.
Of course, the most important question is, "What's the deal with Beetlebaum?"
My New Beetle has a broken shifter bushing, which requires a ridiculous amount of work and expertise beyond what I possess, so the car is at the shop finally after sitting since July. The car I've been borrowing, my brother's Suzuki Samurai, has developed a major coolant leak (ironic, isn't it?), so it's down for the count as well.
Which means that Beetlebaum needs to make a comeback.
So over the past few days, I've been working on him for the first time in years. I got all the engine tin back in place and took stock of all the parts i have. I'm working to get the fuel tank reinstalled, because it had gotten rust and sediment in it when the fuel went bad from sitting for so long. The rust had clogged the fuel filter and the actual fuel outlet pipe from the gas tank itself. So I'm hoping that I've addressed that problem adequately and won't have to worry about it anymore!
Beetlebaum has been inching, literally and metaphorically, toward the road again, as I move him to get space to work underneath him. He has sat for so long in one spot that the driveway has rust spots from where the rain has dripped off of my car.
I always seem to do most of my work on this car in the winter. _________________ 1973 Super Beetle

It's great to see this car making a comeback, though unfortunate it's being pressed into service rather than as a pleasure vehicle.
It will outlive them all. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.
