It basically supports the bus or beetle at the rear torque spring housing tube and the front chassis area around the frame head/lower front axle tube.

The screw/lever lift has a somewhat different design but basically the support looks to be the same as on this single center post hydraulic lift ( which is also pictured in said VW binder). These can still be found today in many an older former VW workshop or smaller garages.

I am curious about this lift and how it supported the vw. Could you provide a better picture from that manual?

Thank you for the photos. I can now see the details of the arms and how they are connected. Makes more sense.

Did they mount different types of tires on the front and rear?

Yes they did. This photograph has been determined to be from the assembly line VW had open in Brazil (SKD/CKD).
Even though by the 1950s both in Germany (Europe) as well as in Brazil, road pavement and road infrastructure was poor by todays standards, Brazil was and still is a lot challenging on that particular. Even today, there's plenty of unpaved roads there!

I have personally inspected a barndoor that I am confident is a factory 15 window. No belly pans ever, clips for the wiring, and a birth certificate showing it to be a 15. But still no pics of one in the factory.

interesting point of view, rarely showing the extreme angle the front quarter vent wings are in a VW (seen in the roof overhang on the sides). It's no wonder doors are ill fitting with that much of a crown in them. I was just thinking about this yesterday, comparing some Fk 1250 Transit van door glass (all straight) with the early VW doors.
Love the grinding marks on the panels. It even enhances the terrific roof peak and wild shape the transporter was originally designed with in 49. The bead down the center windshield pillar is just a work of art. pure class design.

No, I don’t think there is
Can’t even tell if it is a Panel, Kombi, or a Standard
Maybe it’s a Standard due to the 4 holes in the bulkhead for a long grab handle?
Mirror arm holes tells us it’s lhd

Prototyp's caption said 53
And 1953 was the year photographer Peter Keetman spent time capturing some cool images of the Wolfsburg factory
So most Bus factory pictures that have surfaced are his work, I think

Prototype must have access to a fair few other unseen Barndoor pics
Who has a contact there?

The vent window areas, with the top swivel rivet point & maybe that lower forward corner braced area, is the main clue this a post 53 bus & not a piano-hinged bus. But it could be a 54 or a 55, if we didn’t know it was 53.

Yes Günther, I agree with you
I really like those grind marks leading off the left from the roof crease
And that strong crease carries on way someway down the nose

Cool new photo

It has to be a standard. you can see the row of small dressed spot welds on the front roof. They hold the little hooks for the cloth headliner bows.
