even for a parts car, this is the only type 3 i could find in a 1000 mile search on the craigslist.
"motor "was" running"
ok, not too bad
um..yeah, it is pretty bad
um...really bad
it comes with extra doors and fenders that are in worse shape.
I can only imagine what the inner fenders n stuff look like

Now that's a typical "east coast" car that's been driven in salt. Our Michigan, along with other close by states have that same "look". I don't blame you for passing on it, as it looked like the glass was the only "good part" on it. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Ya. BTW, Thanks for the info on the beam weight. I made a deal with a guy whose going to ship me two doors, two front fenders, two rear fenders, a spare tub and a disc to disc beam for future use.
Ill post up how it works out, but the quote he got from XPO to ship from his nearest terminal to mine is 500. Its 40 miles away, but it then gives me an opportunity to go to Papa Johns, aka Papa Shaqs to get delicious pappadillas.
IF it works out
Itll take longer, but thats the price from California to New Hampshire, and thats only 100 more than fedex would have charged the guy in Oregon for one fender.
none of this is bad on mine, I just like having the stuff on hand in case some dork hits me in a parking lot IN A BRIGHT YELLLOW CAR!
But, Im a mailman, in a red white and blue truck with strobes and ive been hit 6 times while legally parked.
OTOH, I started to get stuff organized with the hope I could deal with the gas stink this weekend, and since ive just been driving in and out of the garage I let her idle a bit, and i noticed the heating up VW smell.
So I went searching, and found this Grrr...ARrrgh...
I'm "hoping", this is just a "Im never going to drive it in the winter so I have the flaps stuck in the open position" and the smell is from burning oil
the PO's idea of rustproofing was to spray oil all over the underside, so it is pretty dirty, and i must have missed this when i was checking it out.
Is there a way to check if its stuck in the open position? I can wiggle it I dunno, a quarter of an inch?
Ive got a new thermostat on order, and i have a bracket kicking around from the thing, but Id rather not take alot of stuff apart if I dont have to, but I dont want to cook the engine either.
I suffer from shipwrights disease : https://www.mgexp.com/forum/mgb-and-gt-forum.1/shipwrights-disease.1573432/
So If its something that I can get away with for now and focus on other things, Id rather do that, otherwise Ill just start disassembling the tin to get to the problem.
But, if theres a way to check it (reef on that threaded rod?) or if someone can tell by the length of the dangling rod if its opne or closed Id appreciate it. _________________ Tilda the Mustard Tigress 1973 Squareback (o'''^'''o)

At this point you could pull the rod down to see IF the flaps move at all. If they do, you could put some weight on that rod until the flaps close, then using a hack saw, cut a slot in the end of the rod (up-down, or sideways) letting you be able to feel the slot, and make a note of where /how the slot feels. Note this will be opposite of what everyone else does, in that they want to put the slot in the up-down when the flaps are open. It's a quick reference, but you need the thermostat in place to set it. I think you can remove one of the black plug wire holders and shining a flash light inside you can see the flap.
Note this won't be easy to do, but most people carve the slot in the end of the rod while the engine is out and partly or fully disassembled (easy to see the flap). I hope this helps. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I peekd through the hole from the wire loom thing, and i can see fins, does that mean the flap is open? I can see what looks like the horizontal rod, but its kindof hard to tell
OTOH i did discover some of the source of the gas smell. the injectors on the 1 and 2 side still have braided hose and they are a bit damp.
Replaced all the FI line my a$$!!! _________________ Tilda the Mustard Tigress 1973 Squareback (o'''^'''o)

Another bonus from my parts hunting trip to the wilds of Sanford Maine was the extra engine that I got has the FI setup, so I could see it out of the car and visualize where the gas stink is coming from.
I think the lines are weeping, but once they mist = fire, so Ill just redo them all.
But i work for the post office so its been 12 hour days for the past 4 weeks so my playing with Tilda time has been severely cut down.
Plus the honeydew list. _________________ Tilda the Mustard Tigress 1973 Squareback (o'''^'''o)

Well, if you decide to replace the fuel hoses, you'll need 25 feet of 5/16ths fuel hose, and 32 FI style clamps (I buy them by the box myself).
I hope this helps. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

The charcoal canisters in the rear and under the front fender are always plugged up from use/age.
They are also dirt/rust traps so we eliminate them.
Find a local Hot Rod Shop to fab the small repair sections you need.
www.masterseriesct.com silver & black is easy to brush on and looks good. _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

Masterseries is a great product, even if you end up wearing it on your skin for a few weeks. _________________ Tilda the Mustard Tigress 1973 Squareback (o'''^'''o)

Events have conspired against me to do any volkswerkin, but I was fiddling around and I discovered this:
My 1973 has U5082962 engine serial, which makes sense, but the distributor on it is a :
311905205L
Which reads from the old volks home as for a 68-69 FI manual transmission
so my 4 questions are:
1. do i time it as a 68-69 would be: Timing Set At: 0deg BTDC Static or @ 800-950rpm w/strobe w/vacuum hose disconnected and plugged VAC CAN 07 022 (the 69 FI)
2 or as the 73 would be: Timing Set At: 5deg BTDC @ 800-950rpm w/strobe w/both vacuum hoses disconnected and plugged. When finished with timing and hoses plugged in, possible readjustment of idle to 850-900rpm may be needed VAC CAN 07052
3. IF I end up goign to dual solex carbs, would I time it as #1, for that distributor, or at: Timing Set At:: 10deg BTDC Static or @ 800-950rpm w/strobe w/vacuum hose disconnected and plugged VA can 07017
So I guess 0,5,or 10 (for dual carbs)?
4. which vacuum can? , _________________ Tilda the Mustard Tigress 1973 Squareback (o'''^'''o)

Time it like a 69, and IF you ever go to carbs, you'll just leave the distributor alone, as it'll already be set. According to Jim Adney, the advance curve of the "L" is one of the best. I've got something similar on my spare engine with Weber ICT's and it runs just fine. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof
