Got rid of the grinding noise by squirting some oil on the shaft thru the firewall.
Is there some kind of bushing or bearing on the bottom of the steering column where it passes thru the firewall? I didn't see anything in the parts book that shows one. Seems like there should be something to center the bottom part of the inner shaft to the outer column.

yes, there might be.
I'm in the process of overhauling the whole assembly on the bench and there is a yoke style spacer that straddles the shaft higher up in the tube and also has little insulators so that the shaft doesn't earth out on the tube (it's a part of the horn circuit). I dont understand why it's there, given that the shaft over it's lower length is effectively supported by the steering box via the coupling.
Perhaps someone has a good explanation for it's existence.

But yes, maybe that would explain the 'grinding' noise you heard.

maybe?

What are you basing this on?

Sorry, never finished this post. Not rubbing on gas tank but the rubber ring on the end of the steering column has popped loose and I'm thinking the inner shaft may be rubbing there as the column housing moves around when turning. No noise now but I can feel it especially when parking.
