My Google-fu is pretty decent, but I could really use help from the brain trust here.
Question: With a 2wd '88 2.1 WBX, how can I use a B5 Passat cluster? (The same ideas would apply to using a Mk4 Golf/Jetta cluster)
The speedometer drive will be OK using a Mk4 VSS screwed into the OSX sensor box, plus some signal processing--several people have done that.
What's stymied me so far is how to drive the B5 tach, which expects either a square-wave or CAN signal, depending on whether it's a 919 (non-CAN) or 920 (CAN) cluster.
For use with a non-CAN cluster, I could pick up a signal from the negative connection to the WBX coil, or perhaps install a Hall sensor where the dealer diagnostic port lives on the bellhousing, plus signal processing.
The number of tach-drive solutions which specifically warn of not working with the 2.1 WBX gives me pause, but then again I won't be using the Vanagon tach--I'll be using the WBX with a tach expecting a square-wave signal.
JSMiller (who hasn't been back on thesamba since September 2019) claimed that he got a usable signal (for his aftermarket AutoMeter tach) by wiring an AutoMeter 9116 signal filter between the coil and his tach. That's the most promising thing I've seen so far. Most topics about the 2.1 and tachometers have to do with more modern engines -> the stock Vanagon tach.
Any ideas? I bet some clever person has done this. Apologies if my searching missed a successful install! |
