Looks like a real nice purchase. Does it still have the FI on it? Just asking as my wife's 70 Fastback still has it's FI on it and it still works just fine (and yes, we're east of the Mississippi). Yes its a 73, and I did buy it from John. Ill do a ..well, not a "build" thread, but a "putter with" or "tinker with" thread once I actually have it in hand.
I have moved on from the buses, kindof too many projects and too much to do, I had alot of good father/son time with them, but I work for the Post Office and since the plague hit its been crazy busy, and to be realistic, I was just going to go on day trips for the most part. I had these ideas of like Moab, but im too old and busted for that.
So I was "hmmm..type 3s. they are dope!" So I searched on the classifieds and the various craigslists, like a jaguar tracking pronghorn in the county of Cochise.
Either they were in really nice shape, and out of my price range, or kinda OK, but i didnt want to drop mad stacks on something I couldnt touch. I really gotta get a photobucket, cuz I have a good diagram of the situation at work. Mail is at 125%, mailman supply is at 50%, so flying all over isnt going to work.
Then i found this one in Oregon, a 66 (mid 67 really), but it was just a bit too "sketchy". The guy wouldnt get me the pan numbers, etc, and it was pretty tired. No idea when engine was run. 1500 bucks
the best car carrier deal i could find was at least 3500.
So i figured Id call John up, as I hadnt been up there in a few years and I asked him if he had any squareback projects?
He said "No, but I have a nice one..California car, no rust, never been hit"
So I had to go to an appointment in white river junction anyways, so I swung by.
OK, its got a little rust, but pretty much the worst spot I could find, and I was kentucky fried mailman by the time I was done, was some scabrous stuff around the deck under the insulation. A few pinholes past the hinge, and a little bit of non magnetic stuff on the bottoms of the rear of the front fenders.
but the worst rust on this is better than the best rust on any VW ive ever owned.
Id rather he hadnt gotten it painted, but its close-ish-enuff.
But it fired right up, its got alot of little stuff to do on it.
I want to say this is the only running type 3 ive seen east of the mississippi.
He said he was sad to see it go, and he didnt really want to sell it, but he recently got a Brasilia and figured it was the time to let it go. He has driven it regularly. As I was checking it out he was giving my wife all these advices on it "How close do you live to the ocean? I was gonna wax it before you got here, so make sure you wash and wax it when it gets home" |
You know the best part?

Ya, its got all of the FI. It looks like hes kept up with it, the fuel pump and lines had been replaced.
One of the vaccum lines had popped off, and im not sure if theres different air cleaners for different years, Im waiting on my bentley book, but when i put it on, it seemd to not idle as good, so maybe it just needs some tinkering.
Its that fat one that comes up and goes onto the front (rear) of the air cleaner.
Tram, that is funny. I vaguely remember that on the yellow PO vehicles in Germany. They also had Things for alot of civilian and military use.
We had a couple of junky ones in the motor pool that hadnt been used in years.
Now im just impatiently waiting for the car carrier
Manfred58sc from Florence , Colorado had contacted me about an error on my bus ads, as weve traded alot over the years, and he has property right down the road from my mothers old house. So I ran this by him.
He was like, "Youll be fine, just drive it home!" . So I did poke and prod and sniff and manipulate the fuel lines, and i brought my blazecut to be safe, but , again, I chickened out. Went to a local all types car show in Exmouth, Devon.
It’s been very hot by UK standards 35C, hence the parched grass.
It’s funny how many people come to look at the Notch and have to read the badge to find out what it is.
Great turnout, no other notches present unsurprisingly.

Hey guys, looking for some insight here to a charging problem I'm having in my 69 Squareback. The generator is a freshly rebuilt unit. Polarizing the unit, it operates as expected. The voltage regulator is a newer 30019 unit, the new style regulators.
Oddly enough, the dash light for the generator illuminates which you switch the key. After having a dead battery at a show a couple weeks ago, I realized the battery wasn't charging while running even though the indicator light in the dash was going out.
Now fooling with the belt (10x1005), with the proper smaller type 3 pulley, there are no shims between the two halves, and the belt STILL seems rather loose.
Thoughts?
EDIT:
I've got the tension to an acceptable rate with the generator belt, now the indicator light in the dash is constant while running. I've already changed out two different solid state voltage regulators, could it be possible these new units are faulty? I do have another unit on the way. But c'mon, really?

Sunday started off, you know, just a quick oil change and valve adjustment......but it turned into a full-on deal.
I pulled the spark plugs to check them and stripped out the threads for plug #1. I think they were toasted already as the plug had popped out on a previous occasion. Anyways. Had to add a helicoil. Nerve-wracking! As it was the first time I had to do any mods to the engine itself. Turned out fine. Now I have the tool and the experience and will travel with both on my daily journies.
I replaced all the flexible fuel lines and added a temperature sensor at the oil relief valve. I know, I know, these machines have been around forever with no temp sensors....but darn it I am just super curious as to what's going on back there.
4 days later Hans is back on the ground and running.

Well, I've been working on my squareback, nearly everyday for the past 26 years. My vision for it keeps changing.
Today, I finally finished my modification from Auto to Stick shift. It has been with a lot of help and trial-and-error, but it works and now on with the next project.
I've cleaned up the spare tire "tub" and am trying to figure out which way the rubber seal goes on and if I'll need rubber glue too. It has been so long ago that I took it apart I can't remember how it was sealed up. The old rubber seal was all but gone when I dismantled the squareback and what was left has since fallen off. I've checked the repair book and couldn't find anything about replacing the spare tire bow seal.
Thought, I'd check here first. I bought the seal from ISPWEST, so I'll reach out to them too. |

Well...we brought this home...It's a 70...with a type IV bus engine...and that is the extent of what I know...this VW world is brand new to me...

Any more pics? I'd like to see how they're holding up the engine and what exhaust they're running on it. My son went thru a bunch of work to put a 914 based engine into his type 3, and currently he's using type 4 (411-412) heat exchangers and a 144-412 muffler on it. Thought I'd try something to make the rear hatch area look better. Instead of trying to install carpet on the wheel tubs, I used black bed armor spray. I found this sandstorm color that's close to what the color of the engine surround is. Here are before & after results.

I bought sidemarkers from ISP a few years ago and thought it would be great if they were dual function parking light/turnsignals. About a year ago, I finally got around to building some circuits to make this happen. I'm using BA9S-AHP5 LEDs from SuperBright LEDs and the circuits below. The boxes are tucked under the dashboard and have had no issues after several months of testing.

Replacing the shift tube bushing and coupler. Found this, so had to replace the shift tube too. This will definitely make a difference in my shifting.

Ran over something and cracked one of my 2.0 liter Fuchs wheels!
I couldn't find 1-2 replacement wheels, so I bought a new set of Mobelwagen clones.
My 3 good & 1 cracked but fixable Fuchs with 4 caps are for sale as a set for $800 shipped in the 48 States.

I was a wily hunter on the facebook marketplace savannah and I scored this trove of parts from a 71! (some of its 70, some is 71)
Wish this guy had decided to sell this stuff six months ago before I paid shipping on some of the same items,, but it all apparently came from a car from new mexico.
2 doors, hood, hatch, all 4 fenders, pretty much rust free.
Engine that has compression and complete FI setup
NOS FI air cleaner
heater boxes
squareback engine lid with the fiddly thing for the grappling hook
bumpers
all the airbox stuff
etc, etc, etc.
plus a bunch of mouse nests and alot of braided hose that should have been thrown out years ago, but
Took about 4 loads out of a subaru outback to get it home.

I've made a few desperate cries for help here over the past 10 months of ownership, but I'm very grateful for the guidance I received from the knowledgable folks here. Also, huge thanks to Jim Adney for restoring my calipers. Getting the car to the point where it could move was easy, but getting the car to stop would've been significantly harder without his expertise.
More wacky adventures to come as I get the thing from drivable to road worthy. Still need a horn, new seatbelts, valve cover gaskets... oh, and a floor or two... |

Finally got around to fitting the rebuilt dual Solex 32-34 PDSIT carbs and stock air cleaner. Although the previous twin Weber 34’s ran well, I just didn’t like the look with the pancake filters on and the accelerator linkage was home made. So much nicer now, stock rocks 🤘
